The freeing feeling of spontaneity
A few years ago, we were at a friend’s 50th backyard birthday party.
It was a cool fall evening, the air heavy with the earthy smell of the nearby marsh, the sky painted deep shades of blue, as eighty or so guests milled about the party, chatting and eating.
Low country boil, a variety of side dishes and sweets filled cloth covered table tops.
Beverages overflowed from bright red colored tubs filled with ice, and sat nestled next to the food.
Music streamed from speakers, and strings of lights hung from moss draped trees, canopied the backyard and over the pool.
It was a picture perfect Savannah, Georgia evening for an outdoor gathering.
Near the end of the night, there were a handful of guests still celebrating with the birthday girl.
Around midnight the birthday girl, fully clothed, jumped in her backyard pool with a hearty “Yahoo!” as she splashed in.
Two others followed.
It took me less than a minute to make a decision.
Fully clothed, like the three others, I jumped in.
(The 50th party was never meant to be a pool party – and therefore none of us had packed bathing suits.)
The fun we had, the four of us who spontaneously jumped in that night.
Under the stars, swimming and laughing until our fingertips were pruny.

“Why not seize the pleasure at once? — How often is happiness destroyed by preparation, foolish preparation!”― Jane Austen, Emma
“I guess sometimes the greatest memories are made in the most unlikely of places, further proof that spontaneity is more rewarding than a meticulously planned life.”― J.A. Redmerski, The Edge of Always
Take a leap.
Do something not planned.
Say yes.
Take a chance.
Jump in.
Live your life as though it were your only (because it is)-
