The Secret of the Sexy Bikini

It is not the lack of confidence that is keeping you from achieving your goals. It may be how you are trying to get there.
There have probably been thousands of articles and books written on setting goals and achieving them. Here is my little take on the subject: It is not the lack of confidence that is keeping you from achieving your goals. It may be how you are trying to get there. There is this thing you want to do, something you want to accomplish, but you just do not know how to get it done. You may not even know how to start – it just seems too huge! So you put it off and take some time to think about it. Six months later you think, “I’ll never get this done.” The habit of procrastination and the lack of motivation has, once again, taken over.
Everyone — even successful people — have bad days. The difference between those who seem to have it all together and those who seemingly do not, is the elusive motivation. Setting goals and making lists are just part of the process. Things do not get done without motivation. Sometimes people are initially highly motivated. But when faced with setbacks and obstacles it is difficult to keep up the momentum.
What is needed is a reason to keep going. Sure, there is a goal to reach, but there is also a reason for reaching that goal: something that keeps the motivation high. The sexy bikini you want to wear next summer; the freedom and flexibility in having your own business; the feeling of the weight lifted off your shoulders once you pay off that credit card. Those are the types of compelling visions which my clients discover and what keeps them moving towards, and, more importantly, reaching their goals.
To remind yourself of your compelling vision, keep visible reminders nearby. Display that sexy bikini in your bedroom. Post sticky notes on the bathroom mirror (or other places you’ll see it every day) exclaiming, “I love setting my own hours!” or “It feels great to be debt free!” Every time you see why you want to reach your goal — confidence, flexibility, freedom — you’ll be motivated to keep going and following through to reach your goal. Keeping your focus on just what you need to do at the moment will prevent you from feeling so overwhelmed and less likely to fall back into the habit of procrastinating. The closer you get to your goal, the more confident you feel, and the more motivated you are to get there.
