Discover how a Life Coach can be better than your best friend.
Have you ever been out with a friend and wanted to talk to them about something important to you and their response was “Uh huh. Really?” Looking up from their phone for a nano-second, because they’re texting another friend, you catch a faint glint of recognition in their eye before their head is down again. Or maybe you’ve tried talking to a spouse, a co-worker, a parent and they’re just too busy. It’s frustrating. And you may begin to feel as though there isn’t anyone who will listen to you. But that’s the very thing a life coach is trained to do. Listen.
There are a lot of reasons people may need a life coach: assessing career options, finding a balance between work and family, prioritizing projects and deadlines, improving relationships just to name a few. But no matter the reason, the benefit of having a life coach is having someone to listen to you without an agenda, without judgment, and, maybe most importantly, without distractions.
A coach notices what you’re not noticing and hears what you’re not hearing. If you’re sounding bored with your life, a life coach will hear it in your voice. If you’re repeating negative self-talk, a life coach will notice it. And, unlike your texting friend, a life coach will give you their undivided attention and tell you what you may have been missing. “It sounds like you’re really bored with your life right now. Have you noticed you say ‘I can’t’ or ‘I don’t have time’ a lot?” Coaches are trained to listen, and by keeping their focus on you and what you’re saying (in verbal and non-verbal ways) a life coach can pick up clues to what’s been blocking you from the life you want.
But coaching isn’t just about listening. Once all the information is collected, then the brainstorming begins. Your coach will become your sounding board and allow you to talk through ideas, dreams, and plans which you may want to explore. Together, you and your life coach will discuss what’s most important to you, what direction you want to take your life, and the steps it will take to get there.
