Don't wait for the perfect time to get started, because the perfect time never comes! Here are 6 things you can do to get started RIGHT NOW.
Every time I hear this from entrepreneurs it hurts my heart: “I’m going to start, it’s just not the right time, Or “I’m waiting for my money situation to be a little more under control.”
Well guess what, the large sum of money that you are expecting probably won’t f’ing happen any time soon. And if it does, you will most likely have another large expense to handle before you invest it into your new business. Here is what it boils down to, there is NEVER a PERFECT time to start. Do you know when your money situation will get a little more stable? When you start doing something you LOVE to do. So lets NOT count on that lump sum and actually get started RIGHT NOW.
If you have that great idea and don’t have a lot of money, here are 6 things you can do to keep the momentum and start to build the roadmap:
1. Buy a book on your industry or a biography of someone successful in your industry. – $25
-Do you realize how much insight you will gain from someone who has struggled in the industry and came out on top?
2. Listen to podcast episodes about your industry. – $0
-You could listen to four different seven minute podcasts on your 30 min drive to work. That seems like a lot of math but its not.
3. Google “How does X industry make money? – $0
-Yes I know as entrepreneurs we think we know everything. But what if you found ONE new revenue stream that you would never have thought of?
4. Sign up for an account on Owler.com and search your industry. – $0
-This will give you top industry leaders, competitors, annual revenues and news updates. Following your market is essential… and its free.
5. Google “How do I write a business plan?” – $0
-You can start compiling information for your business plan without spending a dime. You will probably save money by staying home and working instead of spending money on a $15 cocktail where your friends are hanging.
6. Reach out to your friend’s, cousin’s, half-sister’s step dad who runs a successful business and ask for their advice over coffee. – $8
-Ask other entrepreneurs for insight, advice, learning lessons or anything they will let you ask! Most successful entrepreneurs want to give back to early stage entrepreneurs. Why not take them out for a coffee and pick their brain?
Total spend = $33
The point is you don’t need $100,000 to START. There are things you can do on a daily basis to move toward your goal and to keep you motivated. And if you stay motivated I almost guarantee that you will find a way to fund it, or find an angle where you don’t need much start-up capital. And that will give you the confidence to jump from your corporate job into doing something you actually LOVE to do. The worst thing you can do is let the funding get in the way of STARTING.
