Inside Outside the Box

“As we grew up, we were taught a set of life instructions ... but these instructions never got updated with the times.”
Growing up, I often heard the old cliché “If you want to get ahead, you have to learn to think outside the box.” I deeply believed this when I first heard it … as it sounded so very wise. At first this was great. But then the more I tried it, the less it seemed to work.
Then I realized, you can never really think outside the box until you know what’s really inside it. Oh, we may think we know, but until we explore our own box filled with the thoughts and life definitions that have been deposited there based on our life experiences, we remain on the merry-go-round.
We are fooled by thinking that by applying all that we have learned and been exposed to during our life journey, that we should have enough information to make the right choices and decisions in life.
But instead we feel frustrated as we stay stuck to a world that just does not fit or make sense to us … like pounding square pegs in round holes.
Once I realized that I truly understood very little of what was really inside MY unique box … and for the longest time I thought I did but I was unknowingly fooling myself … I knew before I could think outside the box, I had to discover what was really in it.
What a difference this began to make for me in my everyday world. Soon I began to see life with new eyes.
There is a wonderful quote by one of the twentieth century’s major poets, T.S. Eliot that says it well.
“We shall not cease from exploration,
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
