Demanding, uncaring leader
Does this scenario sound familiar? George is one of the best talents in your organization. Since he came to work for you 2 years ago he has surpassed your expectations for getting bottom line results. He has drive and a “get it done” attitude. With all his strengths, there remains a nagging concern that you just don’t know how to address. George has a way of irritating everyone around him. His team members are avoiding him and report that he is rude, controlling and uncaring of others on the team. You have noticed that his interpersonal skills are a bit rough. Things are beginning to get out of hand.
You have received feedback that his direct reports are fearful of him and want to be transferred out of his department. This is not what you need right now as new demands from your customers are requiring you to ask your team members to work even harder. You certainly don’t want to lose good employees right now. You recognize George’s talents and you have talked to him about his demanding approach but nothing has changed. You want to retain George and develop his leadership skills. What now?
There is a solution. Good leaders are developed, not born. George’s challenges can be addressed thorough leadership coaching. Coaching is a goal directed process that can help George improve his interpersonal skills before more damage is done. Employees quit managers not companies. By providing feedback and following a coaching process, behaviors can be changed.
