Standards of a Therapist: Why We Must Strive for Solutions, Not Treatments

As therapists, the quality of our work reflects how well we take care of ourselves. We often fall into the trap of prioritizing others while neglecting our own well-being. It’s easy to do, especially in a profession where your focus is helping people. But here’s the reality: if we don’t care for ourselves, we can’t provide the best care for others.

The Responsibility of a Therapist
When a client walks into your office, they’re not looking for a long-term treatment plan. They’re looking for a solution. A resolution. An end to the pain they’ve been carrying.
Think about it:
• If you go to a dentist with a cavity, you don’t want a lecture on managing tooth pain—you want the cavity fixed.
• If you visit a doctor with an infected wound, you don’t want a band-aid slapped on—you want the cause of the infection removed.
Your clients are no different. They come to you because they’re struggling with something that feels impossible to solve on their own. They don’t want their pain managed; they want it gone.
Fix the Root Cause
As therapists, it’s our job to dig deep and identify the root cause of the problem. Why? Because a problem doesn’t exist without a cause. And the beauty of this truth is that it means every problem has the potential to be resolved.
When we help clients uncover the cause—whether it’s an event, a belief, or a memory—they can finally let it go. And letting go isn’t just about feeling better in the moment. It’s about freeing them from the burden that’s been holding them back, so they can move forward without carrying the same pain.
Believing in Solutions
Here’s where it gets tricky: not every therapist believes there’s always a solution. Some see certain problems as unfixable, manageable at best. But that mindset does a disservice to our clients.
The first step to finding a solution is believing there is one. Even if it’s not immediately obvious, the willingness to explore, to be curious, and to challenge assumptions is what leads to breakthroughs.
Yes, therapists are human. We don’t know everything. But that’s not an excuse to settle. If we hold ourselves to the standard of seeking solutions—real, lasting ones—we’ll be amazed at what’s possible.
A High Standard of Care
When a client comes to see me, my goal is simple: to ensure that this is the last stop on their journey to healing. I don’t want them to feel like they need to keep searching for help. I want to solve their problem completely, so it never comes back.
That doesn’t mean life will be free of new challenges. But it does mean the same issue won’t haunt them anymore. They’ll be free to face new opportunities and new obstacles with a lighter heart and a clearer mind.
This standard isn’t about making someone feel better temporarily. It’s about giving them the tools, clarity, and freedom to live the life they deserve.
Working on Ourselves
We can’t provide this level of care if we’re running on empty. Taking care of ourselves isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Whether it’s prioritizing mental health, maintaining balance, or continuing to grow and learn, we owe it to ourselves and our clients to be at our best.
The Power of Change
Every problem has a cause. And if we can uncover that cause, we can change a person’s personal history. Not the events themselves, but the way those events shape their present and future.
