Research the person you are talking to and have something specific that you are trying to learn and state upfront what you hope to learn.
“I’m looking to learn about your path into X.” isn’t going to cut it for people who are time-poor and receive lots of cold emails.
Instead, “I see that you used to work in product management and now are an early-stage investor focused on identity. I’d like to learn about what was transferable and how you apply your previous experience because I also am interested in startups in that area.”
2. Do ask them open-ended questions. (Send these ahead of time)
3. Do ask them what they would do in your shoes. (They may surprise you)
4. Ask whether there is a career path that is fixed or fluid for their industry.

5. Don’t make it about them hiring you for an internship or job.
6. Don’t ask to pick their brain.
7. Bring research or a project and offer to share something with them that will benefit them now or in the future (share articles or news about what you are doing).
8. Be respectful of their time.
9. Thank them and ask what they are working on right now that’s a challenge (perhaps you can help!).
10. Be generous to others one day when you are fortunate enough to do so.
