Last week, I ran into a participant from one of my coaching workshops. It was the privilege to witness a remarkable transformation, an experience that beautifully illustrates the power of coaching, taking control, and being ‘on the cause side’ of your life.
Meet Rita (name changed), a dedicated professional working in the hospitality industry; A year ago, she was struggling with her job and manager. During the sessions, she often voiced her frustrations, echoing the sentiments many of us have felt at some point: “I can’t help being bitter. It’s all because of my manager and work environment.”
One day, as we delved into the Cause :: Effect equation, Rita had a breakthrough moment. She stated that she had been living her life as the effect of her circumstances, particularly her strained relationship with her manager.
Rita decided to make the following amends to stay on the cause side of the equation:
Mindset: She began to be mindful of her thinking patterns and decided to believe in her ability to make a change, even if everything was not within her control. She adjusted her mindset, her behavior, and her approach to responding.
Action: Irrespective of the situation, she thought about what she could do and became a creative, proactive person. Instead of complaining, she initiated constructive conversations, sought feedback, and actively listened to the concerns.
Repetition: Rita created rituals with repetition of her proactive actions. She took responsibility for her actions and beliefs, even in challenging situations.
Knowledge: Her success at work grew as she was building her knowledge base daily. Instead of being the effect of her circumstances, she learned to be ‘at cause’ in her life.
What happened next was truly inspiring. Rita started noticing changes in her working relationship with her manager. He began responding positively to her newfound attitude and willingness to collaborate. Gradually, the tension started to dissolve, and the working environment became more harmonious.
Last month, when her manager moved to another company, he recommended Rita for promotion, and now she is the head of her department.
Thousands of experiences like this stand as a testament to the transformative power of coaching and the incredible potential within each of us to shape our destinies.
Choose to be ‘at cause’, take control, and steer your paths toward success.
