Anxiety is a self-perpetuating loop

3 steps to conquer anxiety
Anxiety is deeply rooted in our survival instincts. Back in ancient times, our ancestors faced constant uncertainty. They had to explore unknown territories, and their brains were wired to stay alert for danger. When they found safety in new places, their brains rewarded them by reducing anxiety. This primitive “data gathering” created a habit loop:
Trigger (uncertainty) —> Behavior (exploration) —>Result (reduced anxiety).
In the modern world, this survival mechanism has evolved but can still lead to anxiety loops. For instance, consider when we receive an email about a work deadline. The trigger of uncertainty (will I meet the deadline?) can lead to anxious behavior, which can take two opposing forms:
Procrastination: Feeling overwhelmed by the task, we may procrastinate. It gives a temporary sense of relief, like avoiding the stressor.
Illusion of Accomplishment: On the other hand, we may dive into the task immediately. But because our hasty approach we usually create a mess out of the task. The chaotic and erratic actions might make us feel like “we are doing something” about the uncertainty, but the consequences of our actions bring even more anxiety.
It’s crucial to recognize these habits and understand that true relief comes from working on anxiety methodically. Let’s see how.
Step 1: Understanding Anxiety Patterns
By identifying our anxiety patterns, we gain power over them. Explore the triggers (stress, uncertainty), the behaviors (procrastination, rushing), and the results (temporary relief).
Step 2: Mindfulness and Psychological Techniques
There are potent tools to set ourselves free from anxious habits. They allow us to observe our thoughts and emotions without judgment. When anxiety arises, we can respond skillfully instead of reacting impulsively.
Step 3: Discovering Authenticity and Purpose
As we progress, we unveil our true selves and find a sense of purpose. By living authentically, we release the need to please others or conform to society’s expectations.
Following this 3-step process we pave the way for emotional freedom and a more balanced, focused, and fulfilled life.
