On Facing Fear

A short fear-management exercise that will guide you through tough situations and help you to tap to your inner power.
Last week my friend went to Catholic mass. There were 6 priests present, but the one who gave the speech was a nun. This nun started with the words:
“The most frequently used phrase in the Bible is ‘Do Not Be Afraid’”.
How powerful is that?
There are plenty of things to be afraid of in this world. The world is scary, people are scary, making life decisions is scary. Fear has a lot of faces: anger, sadness, depression, confusion, nervousness, frustration, hastiness, indecision and doubts, discouragement, sarcasm, judgement, aggressiveness, arrogance…
And being scared is OK.
It doesn’t mean that you should let the fear to take over.
No matter if it’s a small thing or a big thing, it’s in your power to overcome the fear.
I’ll give you a practical exercise on how to deal with fear. First, think of something fearless and invulnerable. Imagine it in your mind’s eye. Maybe it’s a person, a book character, an animal, a tree, a sword, a rock, an ocean. Maybe it is YOU in some situation, where you felt absolutely fearless. Whatever it is, hold it in your imagination: feel it, hear it, smell it. And then make a step forward and step into this image. Became this fearless and invulnerable thing, feel it, hear it, smell it, breath through it.
How does it feel to be this fearless and invulnerable thing?
What do you sense in your body that is different from your ordinary feelings?
What are your thoughts about the dangers of the world now?
What would you say to your ordinary self?
Remember this state of fearlessness and invulnerability, remember this image and go into it every time you feel afraid.
