Catching Moment!

We live in a busy world filled with all kinds of distractions, but they don’t have to disconnect us from spiritual connection, meaning and purpose.
We live in a busy world filled with all kinds of distractions. Computers, laptops, tablets, phones, watches. All of these things constantly connected to the internet, even your fridge these days. That comes with great benefits, but it also comes with many hurdles. The impact of social media, and the way we consume information, is having an impact on us as humans. You don’t have to dig too deep to see that, and it’s not very optimistic at times.
The way we interact with each other has changed drastically even in my lifetime. I remember having dial-up internet when I was at the end of primary school early high school, and pictures would download line by line. We have come so far. With all this technology at our fingertips and the pace of life increasing, it’s no wonder that spirituality gets neglected by many people.
I believe we are spiritual beings who have a soul and live in a body. We are not human beings looking to have a spiritual experience. For me, that reality is made sense of through the Bible and relationship with Jesus The Christ.
We often don’t give ourselves the time to think about these things because of the pace we live at and the things we constantly consume in our lives. Many people feel like something is missing or not quite right. We hit the gym for 40 days, start a new diet, re-arrange our house whatever, we usually look to do more, add something or create something new. These things are not bad, but I want to suggest trying something different.
I like to think of us as people like an ocean. Many rivers flow into an ocean, and these rivers team with life. They all together bring health to the ecosystem. Rivers that flow into our ocean are the spiritual river, a physical river, and a mental river. If we neglect one over the other, our ecosystem gets upset, and we are not at our best. The river I want to focus on is spiritual.
How do I maintain my spiritual river? I want to suggest it starts by catching moments!
It starts by willfully disconnecting from the digital, taking a few breaths and just allowing yourself space to connect back into your spiritual being.
When I say catching moments, I think of what it is to catch something. It takes focus, timing, effort and taking hold of it firmly.
A moment is all about being present. It’s not thinking about tomorrow or dwelling on yesterday. It is stopping, engaging in the present.
Just this afternoon, I was outside with my one-year-old as he was running around in the rain. There was this moment where I really entered into being present, looked at his face and soaked it in. Appreciating his gorgeous face, noticing how much he looked like me, seeing how much joy was on him. That moment made me think about God and how amazing God is as The Creator and how grateful I was to know him and be given this boy into our lives. I connected with my spirituality at that moment deeply.
When was the last time you connected with your spirituality?
When was the last time you paused and got still enough to connect with what’s happening in you?
When was the last time you allowed yourself to be totally present in the moment?
I believe Jesus is always calling to us and inviting us into His presence.
Here are some things that may help you as you try to acknowledge your spirituality and try catching the moments.
Try going for a walk without your phone or music, just you.
Practice being present by disconnecting from technology and really being in the moment, whether with a friend, family member or spouse. Soak in the moment, make an effort, timing, focus, take hold of the moment firmly!
Get into nature, do it intentionally by setting a time and place to visit.
Put on some Gospel music and allow yourself to just sit and be still, listening with the intention to hear the words. Words are powerful; they have the power of life and death. Take in some affirming and uplifting words.
Give yourself some space in your day, some margin to just sit, breathe and listen.
Catch a moment in your day to connect with your spirituality.
Love to hear how it goes for you.
