Uncover Your Passion & Purpose

One powerful thing you can do to start living your dreams and release the need to fulfill the dreams others placed upon you.
You might be asking how can I uncover my purpose and passion now in my mid 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. It may feel like an impossible wish when for most of your life your purpose has evaded you.
I would challenge your thinking. Have your desires and dreams really never shown up in your thoughts? I would guess that deep in your soul you know what you want for your life or you have a deep sense of knowing that there is something more for you in life. You are meant to do more, be more and experience more. Those thoughts that slip into your thinking hold the keys to your purpose and your passion.
I am up at 5 am, honoring myself and my morning routine. I choose to make my days and time mean something. The thoughts I choose create my reality. I am choosing to be positive and see all the positive that surrounds me everyday.
The honest truth is I have always been an early riser. However, I didn’t always honor myself and I certainly didn’t have a morning routine. You know why? Because no one told me that I should have one. I spent most of my life being told what I should or shouldn’t do to be accepted. I had stopped thinking for myself or it felt that way.
I once had dreams and ideas of my own, but they often felt ignored or pushed aside. When I think of all the things I wanted to be when I grew up, but was told I wasn’t meant for those things it hurts. It actually makes me cringe.
It didn’t matter that I wanted to be a teacher, a dancer or maybe a psychologist. Nope, business was going to be my major, said my very practical Dad.
I spent 5 years working on my Bachelor’s degree in Finance. It was painful, hard and totally unfulfilling. I did what I needed in order to graduate and get a good job. I wanted to make my Dad proud.
Ugh! The days were long, the jobs painful and I kept searching for light at the end of the tunnel.
I was presented an opportunity to work in Human Resources. My Dad disapproved, said it was a limiting job. I hesitated to take the opportunity, but this time I defied that advice and followed my desire. I still wasn’t satisfied, maybe I shouldn’t have switched careers? Welcome the self-doubt.
I convinced myself that if I had applied myself more during college I would be enjoying my working life more. So I did what any sane person who despised their field of study does. I went back to school to pursue my MBA. Yes, glutton for punishment. I worked harder this time, focused more and felt very accomplished when I graduated.
My Dad cried at my graduation. It was a proud moment for him. I realized I was fulfilling his dream for me, not my own dream. Not only did I earn my MBA that day, but I also learned a very valuable lesson that I want to share with you.
LET GO OF OTHERS EXPECTATIONS
Yes, your parents meant well when they pushed you in one direction or another. Friends that hand out free advice like candy and push you to dress or do things outside your comfort zone really do have good intentions. Your partner who questions your “crazy” idea to start your own business thinks they are being supportive and protecting you from disappointment.
Let the voice of others and the expectations others go, release the pressure to be what other people need you to be and find your own path. You have your own answer to your big question of what is your passion and purpose. It’s time to turn up the volume on your internal guidance and hear what she has to say.
Inside there was a voice telling me that there was something more for me. I wasn’t meant to sit in an office all day pushing papers. I was meant to connect, serve and make a greater difference. I kept listening to that voice and following it where it lead me. I followed it even when it didn’t make sense or I didn’t know where it was leading me.
I started believing in myself, my dreams and took a huge leap of faith. I have no regrets for pushing the status quo and creating my own business. I am now living my life on purpose and following my passion. I love owning my own business, the work I do with women, and the freedom I feel everyday.
My life became much easier and enjoyable when I let go of others expectations and stopped trying to fulfill someone else’s dream.
