Are you lazy, lack willpower, and struggle to achieve your goals?
This article explains why that's just not true and what you can do about it
Are You Missing the Key Ingredients to Making Changes in Your Life?
How much progress have you made on the goals you set for this year?
Have you successfully implemented the changes in your life or business that you want to make this year?
If you find yourself feeling embarrassed about answering “None,” “Not as much as I’ve wanted to,” or, you start listing all the reasons why you haven’t done what you wanted to do, I want you to STOP!
PLEASE, don’t feel bad or start beating yourself up for the lack of progress. Life happens, things come up, you get derailed, and it is REALLY hard to get back on track if you don’t have a support system in place to help you.
It’s not that you are lazy or lack willpower. Most likely you lack the key ingredients in making changes in your life – support and accountability.
Your internal saboteurs set up self-limiting beliefs or distract you with F.E.A.R. (false evidence appearing real). You lose your motivation as you lose sight of your WHY (the emotional connection to the goal). You may even fall back into old habits, but the key reason you struggle is that there is no external support and accountability. You are not alone, 80% of people need these to succeed!
Think about it.
Where you have accountability, you have progress.
At work, you have accountability to your clients/customers, team, or boss. You meet deadlines, finish projects, and complete tasks. Things get done!
If you have a personal trainer, they hold you accountable for doing your best and pushing past your comfort zone to improve physically. Change happens and your body and mind get stronger in the process.
Parents – you know your kids, without even being aware of it, they hold you accountable for taking care of them. “What’s for dinner?”, “You said I could play after I finished my homework!”, “I have a game tomorrow, did you wash my jersey?”.
The list goes on, but my point is that in every other area where we strive to be our best selves there is external accountability. So why are you trying to make personal improvements without external support and accountability and then blaming yourself for slow progress or failures?
Why Does It Make a Difference?
“When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates”
– Thomas Monson
On Chopra.com, Karson McGinley writes, “Studies have shown that when you share your goals with others, you are twice as likely to achieve them than if you keep the goals to yourself. For the same reason, exercise buddies and personal trainers can help you to follow through on your workout goals, accountability when goal setting is one of the most crucial elements in your success.” She notes a good accountability partner will be a source of encouragement with things get tough and everybody can use a cheerleader in their life to remind them of the greatness they can achieve. She recommends joining an accountability group or getting a coach who can help you track progress, celebrate wins, and guide you through obstacles.
For all my small business owners (I work with many!), here is some information from Marla Tabaka at Inc.com. Marla quotes psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews talking about her study on goal achievement in the workplace. “My study provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of three coaching tools: accountability, commitment, and writing down one’s goals,” Matthews said. It’s that final step of reporting their progress that gave group 5 the boost they needed to get things done. Marla adds, “In my experience, merely informing a friend or peer of your intentions isn’t useful in terms of creating accountability. It may work for a week or two, but interest tends to fizzle. Hire a great coach instead.”
As you can see, support and accountability are crucial to achieving goals and creating change in your life. If you would like to talk about what support and accountability can look like for you, I invite you to schedule a Discovery Call and let’s talk about what your options are.
