Is there a magic secret ingredient which you can develop or acquire to help you become a successful leader?
Is there a magic secret ingredient which you can develop or acquire to help you become a successful leader?
The reality is NO.
In the earlier days, when jobs and opportunities were limited, people would blindly follow the boss – more out of compulsion than actual respect. In today’s age, when opportunities are plenty, people are highly self-aware, respect themselves better – and hence, leading a multi-generational, multi-faceted workforce requires a Personalized Leadership Approach.
A leader should be
-a 360 degree leader with the ability to Lead Up, Down and Across.
-a Nurturing leader, looking out for the team, teaching them and coaching them.
-an inspirational leader – with strong Executive presence, have a strong personal brand, have the ability to articulate the vision and inspire others
-a big picture thinker – ability to drive the vision, strong strategic thinker
-a good manager who can get things done by their teams.
Above all, a leader should be a good relationship builder.
I believe that the shelf life of a working professional is decreasing. Once people cross 40 years of age, many seem to struggle to progress as they lack strong leadership skills. Organizations are looking for leaders and not individual contributors at that age. It is not a skill you can learn overnight. You need to learn, practice, implement and if you fail, re-learn, practice and implement again….. It takes time and practice to develop strong leadership skills
So, start developing your leadership skills early in your career so that you don’t regret it later.
Are you upskilling yourself? If not, start today!
