Do It the Best Way, Not the Hard Way

When we set goals only to give up on them, maybe it’s because we’re going about things the hard way.
While handing out swag bags to attendees of the 2021 OutBound conference in Atlanta, I repeated myself again and again: “This is your badge that attaches to your lanyard. Use the Sharpie in your bag to write your name on your badge.”
As these words left my lips, a lady slipped her lanyard with her badge on it around her neck. She then pulled the Sharpie from her bag, bent over to the table so the badge would lie flat on it, and began trying to write her name on the badge. After a great deal of frustration and a couple of starts and stops, she quit with only a weird squiggle on her badge to show for her effort.
I give you my congratulations on setting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound goals. That one step puts you on your way to success. But which way will you get there? The hard way, like the lady with her event badge, or the best way, like the high performer you aspire to be?
Achieving meaningful goals is hard enough as it is. Right? Following through when met with obstacles is a challenge that can thwart even the most dogged among us.
We need to identify and use the approach that gets us what we want with the least amount of resistance. Unfortunately, most of us are myopic when it comes to identifying that approach. We can’t see the big picture that allows us to consider all potential paths and pick our best one. So we choose to go a route riddled with roadblocks and difficulties. Sometimes the going gets so tough that we quit short of our goal.
If you’re tired of doing things the hard way, and you’d like to figure out the best way, then collaborating with a coach is your answer. A coach can give you perspective. A coach asks you the hard questions that aid you in gaining clarity about your options. A coach guides you in developing and implementing skills and creating a plan that will get you to your goal the best way instead of the hard way.
