You know what to do - the question is, do you want to?

Having made a decision, why is it that sometimes it can be so challenging to follow through and make things happen? Let's take a look at motivation.
“Ain’t no big decision
You know what to do
La question c’est voulez-vous?”
I wrote recently about how difficult decision making can be and I shared some thoughts and ideas about how to make it a little
easier.
So, having made the decision, why is it that sometimes it can be so challenging to follow through and make things happen?
The simple answer to that is to ask yourself how much do you want your decision to become a reality? Benny and Bjorn of ABBA* put it succinctly (and partly in Swedish-French) when they wrote the lyrics:
“Ain’t no big decision, you know what to do….la question c’est…voulez-vous…?”
So what makes you want to do something? The answer is in your motivation.
Other notable song writers have written about that, some more frequently than others.
Queen for example were motivated to declare that ‘I want it all (and I want it now!)’ – you can’t get more emphatic than that – before realising ‘I want to break free’ and then becoming more reflective on their motivation by asking ‘Who wants to live forever?’
In the 80’s WHAM! pondered over ’Everything she wants’ while in the 90’s Ace of Base considered the implications of ‘All that she wants”.
Back in the 60’sThe Beatles sang ‘I want to hold your hand’ and then became more demanding with ‘I want you’. While
Dusty Springfield really focused on her goal and became very specific about what she wanted by stating ‘I only want to be with you’. A few years later, Rod Stewart took a similar tack when he stated, ‘I don’t want to talk about it’.
Each of these song titles and their lyrics open a window to desires, expectations, wants, needs and dreams…and how to get them.
Having made your decision, are you clear on what it is that you want? Maybe you need to break it down so that you get the clarity you need to trigger the motivation to see your decision through? Like the lyrics to a song, maybe you need to take things one line, or maybe even just one word, at a time.
Struggling here? What if now is the perfect time to reach out for a coach to champion your decision, get clear on your motivation and be sure then when asked the question – voulez-vous…? You are ready with an emphatic, “Oui, bien sur”?
