What's Love Got to Do With It

Love is a term typically not used in business, however, it can powerfully transform team productivity through enhanced kindness and respect.
What’s Love Got to do with it? That is the question raised in that popular song by Tina Turner. Love is a term not generally used in business. Of course, I am not referring to romantic love, although clearly that happens for some people in the workplace. But when it comes to productivity, teamwork, and successful projects, love is in fact, an immensely powerful tool. That is, love lived out as kindness and respect.
Over my career leading projects in large corporations, I have experienced both kind, and unkind leadership. On one end of the spectrum, I have seen unkindness contribute to an employee’s suicide and at the other end I have seen seemingly impossible projects completed with excellence due to kindness and respect among the team.
Leading by fear and disrespect poisons the work environment and suffocates creativity and teamwork. I love this quote by the Dalai Lama:
If you develop a pure and sincere motivation, if you are motivated by a wish to help on the basis of kindness, compassion, and respect, then you can carry on any kind of work, in any field, and function more effectively.
Contrary to the old cliché that kindness is weakness, kindness and respect are strengths that bring love into a healthy, well-functioning organization. What’s love got to do with business? It is the bedrock of a healthy, motivated, fully productive team. As a Society for Human Resource Management article stated:
When building a team, it is important to establish respect, dignity and kindness as foundational principles. This will very likely increase productivity and reduce the risk of violent workplace behaviors. When employees feel respected and treated with dignity, they are more likely to treat co-workers and customers the same way. This creates a positive culture within the organization.
Let me help you and/or your team succeed by engaging the inspiring power of love, made evident through an atmosphere of Respect and Kindness.
