Simplifying your life through tiny living (Part 10)...Final Thoughts

Some final thoughts on living a simplified (tiny house) lifestyle
My final takeaways, if I have any from living tiny for over three years now are random at best.
I’ve certainly learned what it means to live a life of intention, starting with what do I allow into
my home and why? What is my morning ritual going to feel like today? As I’m moving through
the year of 2019, I’m tracking it with a visual time wave so that when I look back on this year, I
can see the living, breathing fluctuation of my year as it unfolded. Assigning a rating has been
interesting for sure. One would presume that “average days” should be given a rating of
around 5 or 6 perhaps. But I have found that the vast majority of my days are actually around
7,8 and 9’s. Although, more recently, they’ve been 9’s and 10’s! I’ve seen a direct increase
here since starting this project but I can safely say that living tiny has certainly helped it. I’ve
certainly started living a life with more freedom. Part of this is having a acquired a job that
allows me an obnoxious amount flexibility right about the time I moved into my lovely abode.
And with that, I started learning to enjoy the simple things even more so than I thought I
already knew how to do. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with any day that its cloudy outside
because I’ve developed a love for just watching the clouds go by! So if tiny living will teach
you anything, it teaches to live a little more simply, have more patience, notice the little
pleasures, take great care in being acutely aware of your mood for the day, and certainly how
to take only what you need.
Let’s take a look at some qualifying exercises before going tiny…
1. Certainly pair yourself down to 200 items and see how that goes. Play around with it for a
few months and pay attention to what stays and what goes and why.
2. Make a list of “what I feel empowered by in my life?” And then make the list of “What I
feel imprisoned by?” And then examine…how might living tiny fit into that for me? For
example, “I want to know where my stuff is” or “I want more free time to read, or garden or
just slow down.” On the flips side, you might say “I feel imprisoned by the garage I keep full
of all the yard tools that keep me busy for hours and hours every year.” OR “I feel trapped by
having to do some kind of house project or fixing something around the house virtually every
weekend.”
3. Find a way to stay in one for a little while. We discussed that at length so this is just a
reminder.
4. Remember, if you live tiny for a year and you don’t like it, you can always go back to
whatever your life was that knew before.
THE FINAL THOUGHT
For me, at the end of the day, living this lifestyle has brought a whole new meaning to the
idea that “BIG things truly do come in small packages!” I’ve never lived a richer, more
fulfilling, happier life than I have in the last three and half years! Here’s hoping that having
read this helped you to perhaps reflect on what is important to you, what your quality of life
looks like right now, and hopefully have a better understanding of the things that you truly find
important and make you happy. Regardless of the size of your living space, it’s always good
to have a solid grasp on just how wonderful your life is, what makes it that way and figure out
little ways to always make a little better. We only get 100 years if we’re lucky. Make each day
count so that when you look back on your life you lived before heading to what I can only
assume is one neat after party to get to, you can reflect back and say “I did the best I could
to make the most of my life by figuring out how I was assigned to help other people live their
best lives! And then do whatever of that thing is or whatever those things are!”
