About Me
Hello! I'm Joel Dietz of Orange Door Coaching, serving clients locally in Houston, TX and virtually everywhere.
I bring to your career transition or executive coaching goals over 20 years experience in corporate talent management, leadership development, human resources, and of course years of executive/career coaching, both in-house, and through my business Orange Door Coaching.
Most of my clients reach out to me for one of two reasons:
1. They are burned out in their current career, ready for a huge change, but have no idea what they might want to do next. (Or they have some idea, but want to validate their instincts while ensuring they aren't overlooking other possibilities.) They are wanting proven methods and support for exploring career options that aren't just driven by what's already on their resume. They want to design a new future that's not automatically dictated by the past.
2. They are people leaders in the organizations in which they work. Some are Director or VP-level executives, others are newer managers. All are looking to develop their people leadership capability and want a coach outside the organizations in which they work.
Additionally, my clients seek me out as I offer evening and weekend appointments which support working professionals who can't take time out during the workday for coaching. They prefer to connect when they aren't getting pinged by Teams messages every 3 minutes. My style is curious and warm, with humor.
I take your goals and success seriously having made substantial investments in my own training including: graduate studies in executive & professional Coaching at the University of Texas at Dallas, advanced team coaching studies at the University of California at Davis, and a Masters in Human Resource Development from the University of Texas at Tyler.
While my business Orange Door Coaching is an NGLCC-certified LGBT Business Enterprise, I work with clients of all backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.

I've been working with Joel from Orange Door Coaching for 6 sessions now. He's really helped me update and polish both my LinkedIn profile and resume, and coached me on more effectively presenting my accomplishments both on paper and verbally. After 7 months of unemployment, I finally have a job offer but plan to continue working with him to continue bettering myself on communicating my strengths. I can't recommend Joel / Orange Door Coaching enough!

I don't always do this-but I'm a firm believer in giving flowers while people are around to receive them. That being said, I had a session with Joel. I was nervous simply because its something new, something for me; an opportunity to invest in myself when I have spent life investing in others. Joel had an introductory meeting to educate me and it completely put me at ease. He asked questions and listened. When it was time for the session, I knew exactly what to expect. Joel was professional, kind and made me think; really pause and think. And to top it off: I truly received more than expected. I learned some things! Thank you!

I have been working with Joel occasionally for the last three years. My wife and I decided to move to a different state. Our kids are all adults, starting their own lives. I had been at the same job as an IT Manager for 16 years at a small company. I was at the top of the department, with no further upward mobility and I was ready for a change. Having no recent experience in job hunting, A colleague referred me to Joel for help with creating a strategy for transitioning my career from being an IT Manager to a Network Security Engineer. During our discussions and planning, Joel asked a ton of questions that got me to think of factors I had not considered, it was immediately clear to me that asking for his help was going to put me in a better position to deal with this transition. The move took place during Covid and finding a job was difficult under those circumstances, in addition to me having little directly- related experience in the position I was seeking. Creating a resume and preparing for interviews was a huge challenge. Joel helped me understand how to market myself for the position by leveraging my current experience as it applied to the new position. He helped me with interview preparation by walking me through a few instances of role-play. I developed a feel for putting my game-face on which made it feel much more natural during the actual interviews. I moved forward with the plan I created with Joels help and was offered a position in the field that I was targeting. I immediately found myself with challenges that I had not expected. I went from working in the office to working remotely from home. My Teammates were worldwide in time zones completely different than mine and not available for assistance for most of my working hours, including my supervisor. My new working environment was very different than what I had experienced for the last several decades. I was held to a higher degree of accountability and oversight than I was used to, as well as every conversation being over the phone as opposed to a face-to-face meeting. It was a complete culture shock to me. I lost self-confidence and experienced a great amount of anxiety. I faced challenges in communicating with my new supervisor, believing that he had lost confidence in me as well, something that I had never experienced before. I talked to Joel about these issues that I was facing. Joel was able to help me take a closer look at how and why my perceptions were affecting me negatively and generating destructive self-talk. I was very uncomfortable being in this new environment and not performing at exceptionally high levels as I had in the past. I continue to discuss issues with Joel occasionally as I continue to adapt to this new environment. Joels insight and experience has helped me through this very tough transition in my life.

Working with Joel has been a transformative experience. What truly sets him apart is his ability to guide you deep within yourself to uncover your true career goals and aspirations. Instead of just focusing on the surface-level steps of job searching, they helped me reflect on my values, passions, and long-term vision. Through insightful questions and thoughtful exercises, I gained clarity about what I truly want in my career and how to align my job search with those deeper goals. Their approach is both thoughtful and empowering, providing a balance of practical advice while encouraging personal growth. I now have a much clearer sense of direction and a renewed sense of confidence in pursuing my next career move. If you're looking for a job coach who goes beyond the basics and helps you explore what really drives you, I wholeheartedly recommend Joel. He has a unique ability to help you find your path, not just a job.

I had been out of the job market for quite some time as I have been self employed. Due to life's twists and turns I had to relocate from Houston, Texas back to New York State. I found myself forced back into the job market. I was apprehensive because my tech skills and knowledge were over a decade old. I felt like the proverbial dinosaur entering a savvy market. I had no clue as to where I could possibly fit in. I did some searching and discovered this thing called Career Coaching. I tossed around the idea and found a Houston based Career Coach, Joel Dietz. I chose to give it a try and I must say...NO REGRETS!!! Joel's coaching prepared me for so much in my new career search. Everything from exploring career options, learning how to balance my strengths and weaknesses, all the way to turning my resume into a strong tool. Joel worked with me extensively on interview coaching and challenges, which I believed was one of my larger obstacles. Joel is a brilliant and compassionate coach and allowed me to discover my employment worth. Although I have moved, we continue my career coaching via zoom meetings. I am pleased to report that only 5 weeks after buying my home and moving back to New York, I have had 3 interested employers with 3 excellent interviews. I accepted a position in the field I was looking for and I could not be more thrilled!!! I may add that I recently referred a friend who is navigating through retirement, as Joel does both Retirement Coaching and Executive Coaching for leaders moving into more senior positions. And as I traverse through the job world I will absolutely use Joel as my coach again! - Paula Crosswhite
