Influence and Leadership

How do you show up in the world?
As I have been studying creative and reactive tendencies and how they affect our leadership abilities I can’t help but wonder:
~ what is the essential difference between leadership and influence?
~can one exist without the other?
Websters defines influence as: the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc
Websters defines leadership as: an act or instance of leading; guidance; direction.
So let’s say that as you influence others you have a choice to make. Do I want it to be positive or negative? How would I want to be guided and influenced? How would I want my children influenced? This choice allows us to guide in a positive direction and to encourage others, build them up so that they can positively influence others. This is Leadership!
What we tend to ignore are the little things. A smile, a grunt, a shrug or an encouraging pat on the shoulder. These things and so many others are simply our way of reacting to situations. How we react/respond to situations creates an influence over those that are observing us. The person who just set your lunch plate in front of you is affected by the eye contact and thank you as opposed to a grunt or being ignored. The person you are managing is affected by a “Good Morning” as opposed to walking by and not being acknowledged. All these little things come from a place deep inside you that show up in how you interact with others. How you cope with stress or life-balance is an example for those around you. How much do you observe yourself and your reactions? We don’t tend to do that, we get caught up in getting through our day and making the most of it. However, if we stop and look inside we can see what creates those tendencies and make choices on how we want to show up in the world.
My Leadership Coaching style dives deep into discovering who we want to be and how we want to show up. I hope to hear from you on what you want to leave behind…
