In NLP, we have a set of six criteria that thoroughly refine the objectives of the goal to create what is referred to as a well-formed outcome (WFO).
How are your New Year Resolutions Going? =)
You know what they say – if you don’t put it on paper it stays in your imagination =) But if you write down your goals – they are a step closer to become your reality.
Otherwise, they continue to be called just fantasies.
I would like to share this simple NLP tool w you – Well-Formed Outcome – to facilitate the process.
A very important component of creating anything in your life is to realize that your unconscious mind is constantly ears dropping on everything you say, do and think and making it real. We are the creator of our reality, good or bad; it’s how we manage our thoughts and actions that makes the difference.
ATTENTION + INTENTION = TARGET
In NLP, we have a set of six criteria that thoroughly refine the objectives of the goal to create what is referred to as a well-formed outcome (WFO). It is more systematic than the well-known process of SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) goal, as it has all the criteria already built in. It is more formed that the SAFE (see, accept, feel and express) tool and more encompassing than the 7-habits goal setting formula. It goes like this – it will take between 20/30min to do it properly:
1. Describe what specifically you want. State this as a positive versus what you do not want. Many people know what they do not want and sometimes start out listing those first.
2. State what you can do and what is within your control. Make a list of things that you can specifically do to move in the direction of the outcome.
3. Where, when and how specifically will you get your outcome. Define and emphasize the specific environment, the context or situation required to reach the outcome. State specifics to give the unconscious mind directions.
4. Describe in sensory words specifics about your outcome. What would you see, hear, feel.
5. Put the outcome into sizeable steps that are doable. What steps will you take to create this?
6. Discover the resources you have and will need to get your outcome. List the resources you have and the resources you need to reach your outcome.
7. Specify the evidence of when you will have your outcome. How will you know when you have reached your outcome? Make this full of rich imagery so you can picture yourself having these things happen.
8. Check the ecology. Does this outcome fit in your life and have no consequences to yourself or others or is it incongruent? Sometimes we do have outcomes that affect others, this is not a problem. It is important that you look at the big picture to determine if your outcome will give you what you want so you can be you. Sometimes by not changing we enable others to be co-dependent or lazy. When you change, other people can change. It has to start somewhere.
Once you have created a well-formed outcome you can use a simple NLP technique known as Future Goal. This technique will help to solidify your outcome and orient your future to welcome it. This is a timeline process where you will drop your outcome into your future.
