There is nothing worse than a leader with a bad attitude. Attitude trickles down and branches out to the very depths of a team. How's your attitude?
(The acronym R.E.A.L. represents Relationship, Equip, Attitude, and Leadership)
Today we’re just going to focus on Attitude.
What is attitude and how does it impact an individual’s life?
“A person cannot travel within and stand still without.” – James Allen
Our attitude is a choice.
Have you ever had road rage or witnessed a person with road rage? What was the outcome of those involved? Even if both vehicles drove away, what do you think the impact of that road rage attitude had on the people involved? What about the onlookers?
“The most important single ingredient to the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.” – T. Roosevelt
Attitude determines our approach to life.
How we react to each and every situation has a consequence. I remember when I was young we had those books that gave the reader the option of deciding which page to turn to next and thus changing the story each time it was read. If the reader was optimistic, they’d create a different outcome than the person who wasn’t.
Attitude determines our relationship with people.
Have you ever listened to a person to complain about their spouse? Did you think to yourself that the problem maybe wasn’t the spouse but the attitude of the complainer? I realize this isn’t always the case but often, a change in an individual’s attitude can change an entire family.
Often, attitude is the one key difference between success and failure.
“Always be kind to you’re A and B students. Someday one of them will return to your campus as a good professor. And also, be kind to your C students. Someday one of them will return and build a 2 million dollar science laboratory.” – The President of Yale University
Attitude at the beginning of a task will affect the outcome more than anything else.
Have you ever felt inadequate when you’re about to do something scary and because of that you fall flat on your face? A bad attitude can be such a sabotager.
Attitude can turn our problems into blessings. Get into the habit of being grateful for everything that happens to you. Good or bad, give thanks.
What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude towards it.
“Every opportunity has a difficulty and every difficulty has an opportunity.” – Sidlow Baxter
Attitude can give us an uncommonly positive perspective. Take 3 art lovers observing the same piece, and each person will describe it differently from a different perspective, based on the attitudes formed by habit. The habit of an uncommonly positive perspective will always see the good.
One final thought on attitude.
I’ve noticed the people with the best attitude tend to also have an incredible work ethic as well, complain the least, and seldom gossip. A great attitude helps teams thrive and grow. It all starts with one person influencing the rest by setting a high standard of positivity.
What will you do to improve your attitude and the attitudes of others?
