By implementing these goal-setting tips you will be headed in the right direction.
Goal-setting for 2020 is underway! Most people have planned out the next year, some are almost finished planning, and others are still trying to figure it out. If you fall under the last group of people, don’t worry, I’ve got your back! here are some helpful goal setting tips that I want to share with you.
Tip #1: Determine Focus Areas & Year-End Goals
First up, pick the areas of your life you want to focus on for the year. Mine are faith, family, finances, and fitness. For each of your focus areas, in a notebook, write down the overall goals you would like to accomplish. Basically, at the end of the year, what change do you want to see. The goals under each area can be as few or as many as you want.
Next, you are going to break them down quarterly. In order to reach the goals you’ve written down by the end of the year, what do you need to accomplish during the 1st (January, February, March), 2nd (April, May June), 3rd (July, August, September), and 4th (October, November, December) quarters?
It might help to map everything out before you transfer the goals to your planner. A friend of mine introduced me to a free MindMapping website, called mind meister, which helped me get all of my ideas out of my brain and right in front of me. I am a visual person so when I can see all that I need to plan for it makes it easier for me to break it down into smaller goals.
Tip #2: Break It All The Way Down
After you determine your overall goals for January, February, and March, you can start working on one month at a time. It may be easier to just get January all setup and two weeks into the new year work on February goals. Remember, you are doing this to make it easy for yourself, so if you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, step away, take a break, and then start back up.
Here is an example of a few of my fitness goals.
2020 end of year goals:
Lose 20 lbs, complete 204 workouts, Drink 22,400 ounces of water, have a solid nutritional plan in place, Take daily supplements.
Quarterly Goals for January, February, and March:
Lose 1 to 2 lbs a month (maybe more, but I don’t want to put unnecessary pressure on myself), complete a total 36 workouts (maybe more or less, I am starting with working out 3x a week during the first quarter and adding on a day to reach my max of 5 workouts a week by end of year). Drink 4800 ounces of water (my goal is to at least drink 64 ounces of water a day 25 days out of each month). Read and watch beta weightloss program documents and videos.
Ok, so you get the point.
I then broke everything down into daily goals for the month of January. This system worked for me during 2018 so I am going to implement it again. The key is to make sure you have specific goals versus general goals.
Tip #3: Transfer Your Goals
Once you have everything broken down into daily goals you can transfer them to your task list, daily planner book, calendar, or phone. Make sure whatever you use, you’ll stay consistent in checking completed items off each day. As I mentioned just complete the month of January. Once you start to check off your daily goals each day you will see where you need to make adjustments.
Breaking your goals down this way helps you set realistic goals that can be accomplished within the year. Sometimes when goals are general with no action plan in place it sets you up for failure.
Oh, don’t forget to put timestamps on your daily goals.
Tip #4: ’Treat Yo Self"- Parks and Recreation
You can also choose an award system based on how well you do for the month. Issue yourself a daily grade on how well you did, that can be averaged at the end of the month. Have a specific reward for each grade. For example, at the end of the month if you receive an “A” then maybe a weekend getaway. For “D” or “F” no reward.
You have to be honest with yourself and accountability partner in order for this to work. By implementing these goal-setting tips you will be headed in the right direction.
Tip #5: “Sharing is Caring” – My Four-Year-Old Son
Seriously!
Share screenshots or pics of your goals with your accountability partner at the beginning of the day. At the end of the day resend an updated photo showing a completed, graded list for the day. When you have to share what you’ve done with someone else you have a greater urgency to accomplish your daily goals. No one wants to turn in work that is half completed, or at least most don’t.
If you have a tendency to slack off then get an accountability partner that will call you on your stuff. If you are working on your budget and want to save, getting an accountability partner that loves to shop and believes “YOLO” (you only live once) may not be the best person for that area of focus. However, if a goal is self-care may be the YOLO person is the right one for you in that area only. Basically, choose your accountability partners wisely.
