Intuition in Coaching
The client has some business goal to achieve, which is where we got stuck from moving forward.
In today’s session while he was drawing a roadmap of the whole plan on the white board, I got curious on one of the steps and queried how he would bridge two parts together. He was thinking for a while and had no answer. But then I noticed he had a funny facial expression and became intrigued.
I asked him what that facial expression was about, he said he didn’t have facial expression. I said yes you did, then showed him that expression he had on my face.
He was a little surprised about having that expression but then said nothing, he didn’t know what that was about.
You know as a coach, you sometime have strong intuition so I sensed there could be something significant. I then kept provoking him and asking him:
“You did that facial expression, what is it?”
He was silent for a few seconds, and after reflected on his thought he said:
“I was thinking maybe could try this to bridge over, but don’t think it would work.”
I then asked:
“What makes you think it wouldn’t work?”
He answered:
“Because there’re some constrains”
I asked:
“What are the constrains? What makes you think they’re constrains?”
After kept going for a few more questions, he ended up finding a perfect solution for bridging two stand alone projects.
I didn’t do much about this breakthrough, but just caught the glimpse of his facial expression and got intrigued. And then didn’t let it go because I sensed that the expression could mean something based on intuition.
