Our Basic Needs
Posted on May 25, 2011 by Patrick Ciriello, One of Thousands of Business Coaches on Noomii.
We all have basic needs which need to be met - unfortunately, we can meet them in either a positive way, or a negative one.
I got off a call again today with my coach, Ted McGrath. Ted is the founder of RizeGlobal, an organization dedicated to helping others, particularly those who are entrepreneurs, to become their best self. His team (of which I am a part) has developed a scientific method to coaching that makes it possible for anyone to achieve outstanding results in a short period of time.
So, what are the four basic needs?
They are Safety, Variety, Respect, and Relationships.
Safety refers to the very basics of survival; food, clothing, and shelter.
Variety is just that – most of us get bored doing the same thing over and over, and so we need a diversion or distraction.
Respect is the desire to be appreciated and to be valued.
Relationships are important as we are social creatures.
We all do what is necessary to meet these needs. They must be met, and we’ll do everything needed to make that happen. The problem is that many of us will do things that are negative and destructive.
When we engage in negative behavior in order to fulfill these needs, we limit our own ability to succeed in whatever area of life we deem important.
What needs to happen is that the negative behavior must be replaced with positive behavior. And example would be variety – positive behavior might be a yearly vacation, or bowling on Tuesday night (which also helps with relationships) – a negative behavior might include the use of drugs.
Now, the importance of meeting all these needs in a positive way is this – Life’s Purpose.
If you are not meeting your needs in a positive way, you cannot determine your Life’s Purpose – your vision of the future is cloudy and uncertain – you don’t know where you are headed, or how you are going to get there.
If you are in emotional turmoil and trying to run a business, your business cannot have sustainable growth. You cannot focus, and your confidence in expanding your business will erode. This is where having a coach can help.
Coaches are trained to be able to listen and guide you through whatever challenges are you facing. We all have emotional turmoil, and it causes us to lose focus on our business goals. For some of us, we still need to determine what those goals are.
In my next post, I’ll share one of the methods we use to find a goal and vision for your life and business. In the meantime, you may be interested in learning more about the basic needs and RizeGlobal.
Until next time, be positive and have an awesome day!
