The Importance of Self Care

Growing up as a young child I was taught to be mindful of others, be nice and help others. All of these statements are true and shaped me into the woman I am today, but one of the most important parts of the equation that was left out; which is to make sure you take care of yourself as well. As Woman we wear many hats, and because we are nurturers we bear a lot and love to help family, friends and even strangers (some would call this taking on many projects). However, we tend to forget about ourselves in this process; always putting our-self on the back burner. Of course, I get it, if you are a single parent, a wife, a caregiver; the family tends to come first. But we must provide self worth and self care in this equation.
Speaking of self worth (which is defined as the sense of one’s own value or worth as a person); I often wonder sometimes do we as women forget, or not value ourselves enough to implement self care? Or maybe it’s the mindset of how will I add self- care to the list of things I have to do and self care becomes last on the list, and sometimes it doesn’t even make the list at all. I recommend creating a routine for your self-care. I had to be precise when it came to self care as a single mother; I made it important and relevant to rejuvenate myself. I started by getting massages monthly and then quarterly if it was in the budget (which I would have saved for) I would do an entire spa day. This would not only rejuvenate me to be able to pour back into others, but it would align my spirit, soul and body which must be in harmony.
My mornings are begin by saying Good Morning to the Holy Spirit, thanking God for allowing me to see another day and asking my assigned personal ministering angels to be before me for the tasks I have to accomplish in the day. I then proceed with giving myself positive affirmations; see this is also part of my self –care to set my day and it increases my motivation, you may do your positive affirmations at night before you go to bed, it may help you sleep better. I find that it ties into one of my favorite scriptures Proverbs 18:21 AMP; Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words. Speaking over your life calling things that are not as though they were promotes a healthy self-care of your mind to produce positive thinking.
While reading The 13th Chest by Anya Hall she made the profound statement: The Woman is to feel good, look good, and do well. She must have time for personal enjoyment, personal development, growth and maturity in the Lord. These things are vital to the woman’s well being and will allow her to be her very best in any of the roles she must fill.
Woman must have key times of refreshing. Live a lifestyle of truth, integrity and faithfulness to God. God gives you grace for what he wants you to do and that is balance. Teach your mind how to rest; the word enforces peace. Take care of yourself spirit, soul and body, strive for healthy eating habits, and make sure you are getting enough sleep. Self –care fuels you up, so whatever you enjoy doing that rejuvenates you, go for it. Soaking in a hot tub, going to the spa, getting a massage, reading, walking on the beach, exercise, or just relaxing, be good to yourself.
Life is complicated – Self-care shouldn’t be.
