Ensure that the hiring manager understands how your prior skill and ability is in alignemnt with a new positon or promotion.
I have worked in different industries during my career. I think what has been most interesting is learning how to paint a picture during a job interview that the hiring manager can understand. It is so important to help them connect the dots. Helping them so see the skills acquired in the past and how it translates to the role being pursued.
How is it that I can launch out of the world of culinary arts into training and development then into organizational effectives and then into business coaching? Easy it is about the skills and traits acquired and the ability to articulate the how it was done in the past and what makes it relevant to the job you are currently seeking.
For example: what if you wanted to move into a position such as Sales Lead for a retail store from a position as a hostess in a restaurant? What are the skills and traits you showcased as that premier hostess? I bet you were organized, handled customers on the phones as well as walk -ins. You probably handled customer complaints, wrote out gift certificates and in some cases you may have led some of the front of the house staff, and so on.
So what does it take to work in retail? It takes those exact skills you demonstrated in your prior role. You were successful in working with customers on all levels. You were successful working with and leading an extended team and so on… In addition you have your traits such as being organized, friendly, helpful and assertive.
We often sell ourselves short and don’t notice all of our accomplishments. Take the time to create a detailed list for yourself that speaks to your different assignments and projects. Make a portfolio of your work so that you can share it with the hiring manager. Sometimes a visual not only creates credibility to what you shared as a verbal example, it also shows your work style and often times it can showcase your thought process or thinking style.
Get started!! Create your list of accomplishments and detail what you did and how you did it. Think about the next role you want and how you can get the hiring manager to connect the dots.
