Ever-changing

Nature gives us reminders that life is constantly changing.
If you have read some of my previous articles, then you most likely remember my stories of walking along the lake shore, collecting beach glass with my husband, Jerry, on summer mornings. This is one of our favorite weekend activities because it is so peaceful and allows us space to be present and in the moment.
This summer, however, we were not able to enjoy our walks on the beach as we have in the past. After an especially wet spring, Lake Erie’s water levels have been at an all-time record high, and our favorite beach has been erased and the shoreline eroded.
At first, we assumed this condition would correct itself soon enough, and we would be able to get back to our beach strolls shortly. However, we are now coming to the realization that this may not be the case for a while, as the beach is still underwater and we are now into September.
As I took my walk this morning, I thought a lot about this as I looked at the expansive water view from the top of the Lake Erie bluffs. I thought about how we never imagined our beach would disappear or that our beach glass hunts would not be possible this summer.
I also thought about how glad I was that we took advantage of every opportunity we had last summer to spend time on the beach, even though we sometimes worried that we were “wasting time.” We mostly recognized though the value of time being present, and often stopped and mindfully breathed in the fresh air and gorgeous views in gratitude.
So, we did visit some other local beaches this summer, and I believe there is a good chance our beach will come back to us next year.
Nevertheless, I think nature frequently gives us reminders that life is ever-changing.
This is so important to remember, yet when my schedule gets demanding, I sometimes forget to appreciate and enjoy all that delights me.
Today, I am committing to do just that.
