Sometimes, You Have to Call Out Your B.S....

A simple shift in thought can change everything!
After two of my amazing clients lost a considerable amount of weight last year on the Weight Watchers program, I was inspired to try it myself.
So, in November, just before the holiday season, I committed to going all in and I did just that. I’m proud to say that I was able to lose 34 pounds over the next six months and maintain my new, healthier weight. And while I feel great about this result, I am even more amazed at how much I learned about myself as I busted some of my limiting beliefs while on this journey.
Oh my gosh, limiting beliefs are so sneaky because our brain interprets them as facts! Some of mine included:
*This is going to be VERY hard.
*I don’t have the self-control that other people seem to have.
*I’m Italian and food is important to me culturally.
*I won’t have any fun when I go out because I will feel too restricted.
*I can’t do it.
There’s more, lots more, but you get the idea.
So, as you might imagine, because I was thinking these thoughts as I set my weight loss goal of 25 pounds, in no way did I actually believe would be able to do it. But since I made the decision to commit, I followed the program to the dime.
The first few days were miserable though, since my primary thought was, “I can’t live like this forever. I hate feeling restricted.”
However, I finally called B.S. on my story.
Once I remembered that I wouldn’t actually have to live without eating pizza for the rest of my life, but would have to be more mindful about not eating 17 pieces in one meal, I relaxed. I began exploring all of the tasty options that I could enjoy, and found pleasure in preparing some new recipes (that were, ummm, delicious.)
While all this thinking was happening, I actually started losing weight, and this completely BLEW MY MIND! I learned:
*It wasn’t hard.
*I absolutely do have self-control.
*I’m still fun even when I am not eating fried foods.
And, get this, I AM STILL ITALIAN! Amazing, right?
Another cool thing that happened is my weight loss inspired some of my clients (six so far) to give WW a try too. Their weight loss has varied from 5 pounds (just started) to 63 pounds (mind-blowing, again)!
What I love is the comments I have heard from them about how this has become more than about weight loss for them. Once they realized, like I did, that they are capable of much more than they were giving themselves credit for, their new found confidence has trickled over into other areas of their lives! Isn’t that awesome?!!!
So, you may be thinking that I am a weight loss coach after reading this, but I am not really. I am a life coach who helps people move beyond their self-imposed limitations to create changes in their personal or professional lives.
Do you have limiting beliefs that are holding you back? It can be difficult to flush them out on your own because your brain may be tricking you into believing they are facts.
