Time Management Isn’t About Time, It’s About Priority

Here’s why your time management sucks: because you buy into the excuse that you don’t have time. Guess what? You do. It’s just not a priority for you.
When most people make a list of goals or habits to implement, they inevitably wind up not executing on at least one of them. Why? Because they “don’t have the time”. After all, 24 hours just isn’t enough for us to head to the gym, eat breakfast, go to work, meet friends, meditate, and sleep 7 to 8 hours. Right?
Wrong. Jeff Bezos has only 24 hours. So do Oprah, Beyoncé, Tony Robbins, and anyone else you’d consider successful. Just like you, they only have 1,440 minutes a day. And just like you, they could use that “I don’t have the time” excuse to skimp on their routines and their productivity.
The difference is, they don’t.
Because they know it’s not about time, it’s about priority. What I mean to say is that you have difficulty with time management because you think there aren’t enough hours in a day. There are. It’s just that whatever you want to accomplish is not a priority for you. And sometimes, that’s okay. Some goals are more important than others. Up until last week, working out wasn’t a priority for me, so I didn’t go to the gym for months. Instead, I focused on freelance editing, starting my coaching business, giving importance to self-care and self-love, which I’d neglected for years. And now that I’ve figured out how to fit in those things into my schedule, I can make time to go to the gym five days a week.
But if you feel working out, or starting your business, or studying for your finals is more important than bingeing Netflix or drinking with your friends, then put that into practice. Make it a priority. Don’t just think it, do it. Act on it. Time is an intangible concept, after all. You can’t run out of it! It just is.
In the next blog post in this series, I’m going to discuss a few amazing techniques that you can use for time management. You’ll learn to make a priority list, manage your schedule, and then actually follow it.
