The Sequel To My Youth

Sequels often don't match up to the original production. I wrote a whole new script for my mid-years and so far the sequel has a better plot!
Middle age is a great time to become a coach. In fact it is a wonderful time to do anything new. I like to call these years “The Sequel To My Youth.” This time is not just the next chapter in my life story, it’s a whole new book complete with drama, character development, plot twists and most certainly comic relief. The difference is that this time I am writing the script and doing the editing. This period of my life is way to precious to leave to the vicissitudes of fate or the whims of those who who may disconnect my power supply.
I feel that I have come to the best part of my lifespan. I have been truly blessed in that I’ve gotten a second chance to do everything over. The bad decisions of youth have been washed clean and I have another opportunity to get it right. I feel like a teenager again, but a teenager with wisdom. As youth is a time to make choices, mid-life can be a time to refine those choices. As in youth, one can discover love or study for a new career. I’ve done both. The new profession I went to school for was Life Coaching. The whole time I was as excited as a kid starting college. Once again the world opened up and I was exposed to new ways of thinking and doing. I started and ended each day in wonderment like a youngster on the verge of growing up and am still overwhelmed by the possibilities ahead.
I realized that a lifetime of prayers had been answered when I was given that gift of discovering passion in my work and in so many other creative endeavors. I suppose a lot of those in my generation weren’t brought up to consider passion as one of the important components of a future career……security, upward mobility, frequent raises and a retirement plan at the end of it all (now you can kiss that good-bye) were what I was instructed to pursue, but not passion. I don’t think we discussed much about options and choices, either. We simply thought we had to make do with the hand we were dealt in life. We had to stay where we were put and make the best of it.
So what is the moral of the story?…….If you don’t like your life (especially past the half-way mark) don’t just re-invent it, resurrect it! Write a sequel that is better than the original .Bet your parents and your old guidance counselors never taught you that.
