I live in a society that has over 300 families. Last week, one of the families had a medical emergency and their family members (yes, more than one family member) were hospitalized due to ill-health. They needed blood donors urgently.
During this situation, it was interesting to see how the other families responded to the situation. As the family was fighting the crisis,
1. Some were directly in touch with the family trying to understand their needs, supporting them and reaching out to others, as needed
2. Those who could donate blood rushed to the hospital to donate
3. Few residents gave suggestions where they can find blood donors
4. Other residents began passing the message in their circle to seek more help
Thankfully, the family came out of the crisis.
While some supported by being there, others supported by not being there – both are critical.
My takeaways from the incident – When we step up in a crisis, our willingness to support and the extent of involvement depends on various things -
- Our values
- Our emotional connect with the event
- Our priorities at that time
- Our skills & abilities to support
What are your takeaways? Is there anything else that you would like to add to the above list of drivers?
