Discomfort over regret! Embrace the discomfort, establish boundaries first, and avoid the regret!
Boundaries uuugggghhhh…
I used to hate establishing boundaries. I’d purposely avoid things I may have loved and had a much duller existence just so I don’t have to establish boundaries. Which was limiting… So I want to highlight the beauty of establishing boundaries first and establishing them clearly.
Boundaries allow us to help others heal. Without boundaries we all get sick. With Boundaries we help others without becoming sick ourselves. In hospitals boundaries look like rubber gloves, face masks, and scrubs. In fire fighting boundaries look like bunker gear.
Boundaries, set clearly and set upfront, give us the chance to keep our feelings and expectations where they should be. They let the people, companies, and organizations know when we’re walking away, stepping back, or checking out and why. They allow us to help while being up front about the amount of help we will offer and where we will start to protect ourselves and back away.
Boundaries allow us to be who we love being and help us interact with people in ways that inspire the best in them without taking away from the best in us.
It’s still uncomfortable establishing boundaries, but as a colleague told us in training once, “Discomfort over regret! Embrace the discomfort, establish boundaries first, and avoid the regret!”
