Invest in the psychological resilience of leaders

The rate of change has been accelerating for the past 2 centuries. Investing more resources in the psychological resilience is crucial.
Reflecting on our recent InsideOut Adventure event in Tirana, Albania, exploring leadership stories, in which we had the honour of partnering with the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe), I wanted to explore some questions and thoughts that were discussed there.
Agile, innovative and creative leadership is growing and expanding across the world, responding to rapid market changes, and with less hierarchical, more horizontal and enabling leadership cultures. With this backdrop, questions surfaced during our Tirana event: how can we prepare future generations for the realities coming? How are universities preparing students and leaders for the future markets, societies and realities? There were lively discussions with university professors who were present: what is the role of universities in the 21st century and how are we responding to the need for future generations to train and strengthen their emotional intelligence and resilience, on top of acquiring knowledge? An interesting debate that reminded me of two leaders that point us in the same direction: Harari and Owen.
Yuval Noah Harari, one of the greatest writers and thinkers of the 21st century highlights that “the rate of change has been accelerating for the past 2 centuries. Investing more resources in the psychological resilience of people has never been as important as it is today”. And our IOA mentor and guest speaker in the IOA leadership stories event in Bilbao, Gareth Owen OBE, underlines that (see video here) “knowledge in life is not enough (…) Your emotional intelligence is the most important thing you can have. When you add that to the knowledge you have, you’ll become incredibly effective in life. A life well led involves loads of emotions. Let it all in, and have a good way of letting it out again, and if you do that, you’ll grow as a person, and limits are endless”.
My question to you today is simple and still provocative: how are you investing in your psychological resilience and emotional growth right now?
