How to have everlasting confidence.

Sometimes we feel confident and sometimes we don't.
Is there any way we can achieve everlasting confidence?
We all have a strong inner leader inside us. Time to time this leader shows up prominently. This leader is wise, courageous, confident, certain and has clarity.
Let’s meet this inner leader by taking a small journey in your life so far. Go to a time in your life when you experienced a peak moment when you achieved big success or took a courageous action or overcame a big challenge. Take a few moments to remember the details, where you were, who was with you, what was happening. That time, most likely you were feeling confident, courageous, happy. You were feeling the presence of your inner leader strongly.
Now notice one more thing, you have been ‘breathing’ since you were born, you are breathing now and will keep breathing until end of life. But you don’t notice your breath all the time.
Same is with this inner leader. She is with you since you were born, is with you right now and will be with you until the end of your life. You may not notice him but he is with you all the time.
To gain the everlasting confidence, all we have to do is to access that inner leader more often.
Now, there is a problem. We also have a self-doubter inside us, who is timid, foolish, selfish, uncertain. If you notice, in your life she also shows up time to time. And when he shows up, our confidence level goes down.
And sometimes this self-doubter is so strong, we feel powerless.
So what to do?
Step 1 Learn the skill to access your inner leader more often.
Step 2 Notice when your self-doubter shows up.
Step 3 Bring your attention back to your leader.
Sounds familiar? Bingo. Mindfulness meditation!
Notice the breath, the mind will wonder, bring attention back to the breathing. Same steps.
This is how it works.
Step 1 Learn the skill to access inner leader more often. Think of the time when you felt the presence of your inner leader. Then list all the attributes of your inner leader. How is he? How does she walk? How does he talk? How does she look? How does he think? How does she respond? What is he? What does she do? And then … think of a name for your inner leader. It could be something your parents called you or anything else like a superhero or your role model. And ask your leader, what small physical action you can do to access her. It could be touching your heart, expanding your chest or simply taking a deep breath. And now… do that action. And then feel the presence of your inner leader. Wise, confident, compassionate, courageous leader.
Step 2: Notice when self-doubter shows up. Yeah, I know you might have already started doubting. So notice that. Your attention has wandered to a self-doubter. Sooner you notice, sooner you can go back to your leader. Ask yourself a question. Who I am listening to? Self-doubter or my inner leader?
Step 3: Bring your attention back to your inner leader and stay with him as long as you can.
As life goes on, these three steps get repeated again and again. More you can stay at step 1, more confident you become.
So next time you are feeling low in confidence, simply plug yourself to your inner leader and charge yourself up!
And that’s where consistent mindfulness meditation practice comes in picture. Meditation helps us to strengthen our mental muscles to keep our attention at a focus point, noticing if attention has wondered and then bringing attention back to the focus point.
And we use breath as a focus point because both our breath and our inner leader was with us, is with us and will be with us all the time. All we have to do is access it more often.
But it’s it is not always easy. That’s why we need stronger muscles to control where we focus on and keep it there. And we can strengthen those mental muscles by daily mindfulness meditation practice.
Mindfulness meditation audio: To complement this article, I have created an accompanying guided mindfulness meditation audio too. So anytime you are feeling low on confidence, find a quiet place, simply put on that audio using a headset, let your mind and brain work through step by step process and bounce back!
If you would like to get mp3 version of that audio, contact me I will send the audio to you.
