Developing your communication skills can help all aspects of your life, from your professional life to your social life. It is a vital life skill.
What is communication?
It is the ability to bring information to someone else and efficiency. It can be verbal or non-verbal. We used eye contact, tone of voice, body language when we communicated.
Effective communication involves reducing misunderstanding and surmounting any difficulties in communication at each stage. Communication is the most important of all life skills. It is what allows us to pass information to other people, and to understand what they say to us.
Communication skills
Positive communication will increase the opportunities you find in your career/ business/relationship. Having good communication skills enable you to get ahead in certain areas where others who are less assertive may not succeed
When speaking, be clear and brief. Speak on important matters, forget the long stories. Make sure you ask if they understand and be willing to explain any of your points. The most important aspects of verbal communication are the ability to practice active listening. This is not just waiting to talk. When others are speaking, think about the words, they are saying. If you practice this, you will understand, the information you hear. Practice open and honest communication with others. Leave the communication open to those who may need to address problems with you. During your communications with others always give them time to communicate their issues. Focused on what they have to communicate, this will show them you are open with their issues. Many communication problems come from impatience to get out of the conversation. If you did not understand the request, repeat back to them what you think they said and ask if that is correct. This will inspire the speaker to be more comprehensive about their needs, which will help you understand. When someone communicated a need or an issue to you, your main priority is to assist him/ her in fixing the problem. Following up on an issue is the way to prove to others that you have listened to them and that their problems or issues are important to you. When people see this commitment, they will know you are open to future communications. This will develop a strong sense of confidence in those you communicate.
