Coaching tip of the week - How to bridge the cultural gap in a coaching session?
Posted on March 16, 2019 by Tania Melick, One of Thousands of Executive Coaches on Noomii.
What comes into play?
-Is there a cultural gap? There is always a cultural gap – between different cultures and within the same culture.
-Can we sail in the midst of all that? of course we can and we should. These rich cultural encounters are the best teachers we will ever have.
-How can we bridge the Gap? Curiosity
Curiosity is an important character strength that coaches and clients need to bring with them to the coaching session.
-How can Curiosity help? Curiosity will trigger in us a beginner’s mind.
With a beginner’s mind we let go of our expectations and preconceived ideas about cultural differences, we listen more deeply, we see things with an open mind and fresh eyes. Just like a beginner would do.
“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” -Shunryu Suzuki
Keep Curiosity in your purse, your briefcase, your handbag, your pocket and take it with you wherever you go. Invite curiosity for lunch and have a conversation with it about any subject you would like. You will be amazed at what you will learn and discover.
