Is Reality Optional?

This articles encourages people to examine how they construct their subjective reality.
On cable news channels we often hear people say “You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts.” Have you ever seriously contemplated the way in which you construct your own reality?
The way we do this consists of a complicated process that includes your sensory perceptions, genetic programming, social conditioning, current life mood and energy, and past life experiences.
In fact, unbeknownst to most of us, the vast majority of what’s happening as we process our subjective reality is taking place outside of our conscious awareness, deep down in the invisible machinery of our human being.
When we notice ourselves being triggered by events taking place around us or by the activity of our monkey-mind, it can be useful to pause and ask “What’s real in this situation?” Then stop and listen. After that ask, “What truly matters to my authentic self in this situation?” Then stop and listen again.
It’s not important to find explicit and immediate answers to these questions. The important thing is to let your awake-awareness expand what you are able to notice about your current situation.
The more often you can use the questions above to turn off the auto-pilot and place your conscious attention on the activity happening in your mind and body, the better your grip will be on objective reality.
A significant benefit of developing this skill is having a greater capacity to handle complexity and overwhelm. This results in more creative and less reactive leadership activity.
