The Tracks

It's Never too late....
For some reason I woke up with my cousin on my mind. The last time I saw him he was being laid to rest. The time before that he was, in the words of my grandmother, ‘knee high to a ducks behind’. There was a big gap in our interactions with each other. Life happens.
At his memorial service I witnessed people stand and give testimony to his transformation. How he spent some time on what many called, ‘The wrong side of the tracks.’ When it was time to come over to, ‘The right side’ circumstance wouldn’t allow. He was allotted just enough time on ‘the right side’ for such a time as this [his memorial service] I learned a lot on that day in April 2010. . How do you get on the right side?
I’ll tell you what I witnessed. The first thing I did was learn a thing, or two, about ‘the tracks’. There is no wrong or right side. If you notice, they lay parallel and the fillers in between that connect them give them there definition. There is a train that many WAIT on the platform for to carry them where they need to go.
I don’t doubt that my cousin took the time to take a look OVER the tracks to see what every one was saying about ‘the right side of the tracks’. He saw something that attracted him. Something he wanted to strive for.
You see where we come from life was hard. Sometimes it was a nightmare being where we were. I’ve been waiting on the train to take me to the other side. He didn’t. He ceased his opportunities. F———— knew that where he was wasn’t where he had to stay. He took a chance. So sad a life had to be taken senselessly in the early morning of his years. It wasn’t in vain. In his life being lost there is a legacy. A legacy of hope, redemption, love and an opportunity at atonement. I have to continuously avail myself of the change process. I also learned about that train that I am waiting for to take me to the other side. How about that ‘train’ is ME!
