Is Your Spinning Instructor the CEO of Your Workout?

Why are you spinning 8+ hours a day in your job? Don’t tell me a paycheck, because just like my workout, I can always find a place to sweat.
….Yeah, I probably would have said “hell no” also – as I like to think I am the master of my own domain, the motivator of my own workout…….but 20 minutes into a spinning workout with a new instructor, I began to wonder who was the CEO of my workout.
Think about it. The Spinning Instructor sets the voice (rhythm, pace), tone (edgy, joke-filled), direction, messaging and the overall work(out) ethic of the class for those 60 minutes. Like a CEO, their guidance is what coalesces everyone to work together to achieve something spectacular in the form of energy for the collective as well as the individual. It is up to the Spinning Instructor to see everyone’s potential and call them out to achieve more or rally the larger group to create additional momentum – motivating the singular riders. They must lead by example, motivate the whole, create energy that makes participants want to achieve, and utilize their expertise in music, movement, voicing orders, etc. to inspire people to give their best and in turn, get the best.
You’ve seen those people who go rogue in group exercise classes; people who dance in a step class, spin fast when everyone else is busting it out to climb a mountain or the person who lays down and meditates during a Zumba class. At the 20-minute mark, I gave serious consideration to going rogue, tried for the next 15 to ignore the instructor and self-motivate, and then started checking the clock every two minutes to see when I could escape. How many of you have had jobs like this? By 20 minutes I had completely checked out. The CEO of my spin class was so involved in listening to their own voice that they couldn’t see what it is we needed to motivate, and in turn; two people left, two more completely disengaged, and then there’s me – who stuck it out until the bitter end – mentally begging the instructor to prove my assumption wrong. Loyal? Yeah – that sounds good, but the truth is that I just wanted someone to see our potential and drain every drop of energy out of what we brought that day.
So, what’s the story of your current CEO? Are they seeing your potential? Are they curious as to how far they can push you? Do they understand that your passion is more important than their own? Is their music playing at a volume where they can still hear your unspoken desire to give more, push harder and achieve for the collective team? More importantly, what’s your story? Why are you spinning 8+ hours a day for your current company? Don’t tell me a paycheck, because just like my workout, I can always find a place to sweat.
This morning I made a different decision. I got on the treadmill and cranked out 6 miles. Yes, I missed the group energy, and yes, I lamented the fact that I had to be my own DJ. What I found, however, is that I was the master of my own domain and the motivator of my own workout. I took control and kicked my own ass. So, tell me, what’s your story? Are you the master of your own domain?
