Why do we suffer?

The cause of our suffering is not in the circumstances!
In my experience, we do not suffer because of the situation we find ourselves in. We do not suffer because of what happened or will happen, our circumstances do not have suffering built into them.
Our suffering comes from the inner fight we put on to change ‘what was or is’ and the inner fight to make things change – go our way. Why does this cause fears, anxiety, suffering? Because it does not work.
This resistance and wanting to push, pull, twist, make things change and make them happen our way does not do anything with the past nor with our present circumstances. It just generates frustration, anxiety and fears, because it doesn’t deliver the results we want.
If you doubt this, check and see if you have ever felt anxious, fearful when the things you did delivered the results you wanted. You felt quite good, right? No suffering there.
So if we want to be free from suffering, we have to stop doing what’s not working. The resistance…the wanting to control.
Does this mean that if we let go of resisting and wanting to control, we won’t care about circumstances – situations anymore? Of course not! It means that now we stopped what did not work so we can finally notice real solutions and do what’s appropriate at the moment.
