Here is a list of some of my favorite books with a short description of each one.
The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho
The Alchemist is a wonderfully written tale about a young boy who is a shepard in Spain who follows his dream. He spends his days leading his sheep around the country side for seasons at a time. When a strange dream calls him out of his normal routine, he discovers his own Personal Legend, and life opens up to teach him its secrets.
I really love this book for its depth, its message, and the entertaining way the story develops. I highly recommend this book to anyone who dares to read it.
The Leader Who Had No Title – Robin Sharma
The Leader Who Had No Title is a great story about a young man who has a job in a bookstore. He doesn’t take his job so seriously and is lacking fulfillment. One day he meets a curious character who takes him under his wing. This man is a leader in the truest sense of the word, even though he occupies a low position in the company’s hierarchy. This new friend takes the protagonist on a series of adventures to meet other leaders who do not conform to the conventional image of a leader, they are leaders without titles.
The book teaches valuable lessons about life and work, finding fulfillment and chasing excellence.
Motivation Manifesto – Brendan Burchard
The Motivation Manifesto is a powerful book that will make you feel invincible. The author does a great job of awakening within the reader awareness of our unused potential, and the commitment to use it for the betterment of ourselves and those around us, and ultimately all of the universe through a ripple effect.
Though it is not a particularly long book, it took me a long time to read it simply because after every two pages or so I was so motivated I would have energy to do push ups or get to work on some long forgotten tasks.
I highly recommend this book, but be careful, don’t read before bed or you may not be able to sleep! This book works better than coffee!
ReWork – Jason Fried & David Heinemeir Hansson
This book was pieced together over several years from the experiences of a succesful young company growing in the tech sector. Their lessons are compiled here into simple to understand short chapters filled with clear explanations and relevant examples.
The totality of this book will change the way you think about running a small business. The lessons inside are clear and simple and challenge the way business has been taught traditionally in a class room. Real life examples and common sense make this book a shortcut to a better understanding of business.
The Power of Habit – Charles Duhigg
In this book, Charles Duhigg delves into the power of habit. He uses anecdotes and research into psychology and neuroscience to define habits, describe their unique position in our lives and in our brains, and to give us an idea of the mechanisms that will allow us to use the power of habits toward our goals.
This very interesting book will help open your eyes to the fact that humans are creatures of habit, and our habits can hold us back or spur us forward.
As a Man Thinketh – James Allen
I found this book after Tony Robbins promoted it on his social media. I was very pleased when I started to read it, and since it is quite short I finished it in a day.
This book is all about the power of our mind to create and shape the world we live in. It describes how our thoughts shape our circumstances, our trajectories in life, and even our health.
A very short read packed with lots of great insight, I highly recommend this book.
Kahlil Gibran is one of my favorite authors, and this is my favorite book of his. A true classic, The Prophet is a poetic story that touches on almost all aspects of life and death, love, work, children, and more.
It is a beautiful and inspiring book.
This is a book about a seagull who doesn’t fit in with his flock. He has dreams of flying higher, faster and farther than the others. He learns to follow his dreams and accomplishes miraculous things once he learns to accept his alienation from the mediocre masses.
This is a wonderful allegory for anyone in life who has dared to dream and felt that there is more to life than meets the eye.
48 Laws of Power – Robert Greene
This book is truly a life changer. Robert Greene has compiled 48 laws of power and explains them using historical examples of proper use, improper use, and tales fables and stories to help the reader understand his point.
The 48 laws of power is frightening at first, because it is devoid of any morality. The introduction warns the reader that this book is not instructing anyone to become a heartless dictator, but merely pointing out strategies that have worked in the past for the reader to make their own judgement.
This is the modern day “Art of War”
Shunryu Suzuki is credited with being one of the first to bring authentic Zen buddhism to the West. This book is a compilation of his lectures given in California in the 1960s to a group of students.
The words were so wise and simple that the students compiled the talks into a book that is very powerful and clear. A great insight into Zen buddhism and the way our minds work.
