Why does it take us so long to make needed changes to our business?

Running a business is tough. It is even tougher when things aren't going well. Find out why it takes us so long to make meaningful change.
It is true, running a business of any size is tough. We develop our products and services with our full heart and mind and then offer them up to perspective recipients with our fingers tightly crossed. We wait, holding our breath, and hope that revenue begins flowing in. It is the anxious gamble that every entrepreneur and business owner experiences without fail. Sometimes you have a hit but more often the return is less than we had hoped for leaving our confidence wounded and our pride a little bruised. It is so easy to entangle our personal emotional reactions to our businesses while trying to maintain a posture of strength in order to appear competent and successful. In fact we often spend a great deal of effort attempting to keep up those appearances of success that we fail to course-correct.
Why does it take us so long to make needed changes to our business? First, because we think that others are actually paying attention and are actively judging us if the offering was not a huge success. We think that our competitors are watching our every move and that our potential client base is sitting by, quietly pitying our efforts. If we pull away our natural, human, emotional entanglements we would see that our products and services are not selling for a reason. Sometimes the concept of your offering is simply not the solution that your intended audience is looking for. Maybe your intended audience is not the best fit for what you are offering or in your promotional efforts you are not reaching that audience. It may even be as simple as the price or lack of price that is thwarting your success.
So, why does it take so long to make needed changes to our business? We are often just to close to the forest to see that trees. Even though we put our best, professional foot forward we lose sight of our natural human responses and emotional reactions. We must expect to try and to fail. Trial and error are an integral part of success and wisdom so fail fast and often to find what does not work and help you find what does.
The best thing you can do to get out of your own head is to hire another head. Find a Coach that works with you to assist you in discovering the uncomfortable realities that you have been unconsciously avoiding. An extra point of view is essential when things are producing to your expectations. Hiring a professional is part of a successful business plan. Not a mark of weakness but instead an inspired strength.
