What does it take for employees to stay on this road to happiness and for those employees who haven’t found the path just yet, how can they get there?
Happiness among employees has received much recent attention and interest, as research has indicated that in organizational settings, employees who are happy demonstrate overall better performance and production, reach work-related goals, and tend to remain in the job longer. The question is: What does it take for employees to get (and stay) on this road to happiness and for those employees who haven’t found the path just yet, how can they get there?
Defining Happiness
Finding happiness is an elusive concept because the state of happiness can mean different things to different people. Generally speaking, when it comes to happiness among employees, it may be easy to assume that things like salary/pay, benefits, lower stress jobs, and paid time off are factors that can lead to happiness. However, if it were true that these variables contributed to happiness, then why is it that some employees in low paying jobs will report happiness and numerous employees in the highest paying jobs can report dissatisfaction with work life and thus be completely unhappy?
The Origins of Employee Happiness
Happiness is highly related to other factors in the employees’ life such as level of self-esteem, positive thinking patterns, and the quality of personal relationships (e.g., family, friends). Therefore, happiness is less dependent on factors occurring at the workplace and more related to factors outside of work and the personal characteristics and traits of the individual.
So if you want to derive greater satisfaction from your work, produce better results, reach your goals, and exercise your utmost professional productivity, you may have to look beyond the dynamics in the workplace and instead dig a little deeper. The precursor to work success is finding peace, joy, and happiness within your self; the you outside of work-life. You will be amazed to discover the numerous doors of professional opportunity and possibilities that happiness will open.
