Chatters Salons – Environmental Role Models

I stopped in a salon at the mall and ended up booking a toning appointment for my naturally dark hair that desperately needed to be updated now that I was dying it blonde. The stylist was a really nice guy and we got chatting and he told me the most incredible stuff. My ears always perk up when I hear anything about environmental issues, so I was keen to listen when he said “Oh ya, we recycle everything here!”
“Oh really, what do you guys recycle?”
“Literally everything”
He went on to tell me they recycle the HAIR (if you can believe it) to soak up oil spills, they recycle the hair dye, the bottles, the plastics. Someone comes apparently to pick up the hair dye they didn’t end up using on a client. It was so interesting to me I asked how I could find more information, so he asked someone and I was pointed to the Green Circle Salons Website. I went and checked it out for myself.
It turns out this is the real deal! Green circle salons website states that they recycle hair clippings, colour tubes and aeresol cans, chemical laden foils, colour by-product, papers and plastics, space waste and electronics. Even though I love going to the salon, I admit I don’t even entirely know what all those things are. But I am so impressed! This company will come and pick up all the waste and in the end salons like Chatters apparently save money because there is a funding process involved to help with the cost of doing this. They also attract clients because – hello! Our generation loves finding eco-friendly companies and the salon gets certified as a sustainable salon.
I wanted to write an article about this and share the news because this is so progressive and points toward a more sustainable future. Picture all the women who go to the salon to get services – there’s a lot of us! Recycling all that material is really admirable and I’m genuinely impressed with this organization.
Stay tuned for more green news.
