It’s finally here!
Summer has arrived with its heat waves and it looks like it’s going be a hot hot hot one!
I am not here to talk about bikini season – although it is bikini season and that’s all everybody is talking about (by the way, to have a bikini body all you need is a bikini and a body: put it on and be yourself!) – what I’m here to talk about is health and wellness during the hot season.
First of all, suffocating humid (like here in FL) or burning dry, the heat requires you to drink more water. You sweat, you have to replenish: simple as that. Make a point of carrying a water bottle with you and sipping throughout the day. Cut down the sugary drinks, replace them with water, take it easy on your coffee and other caffeinated drinks like teas and energy drinks (they just make you even more dehydrated) and enjoy some pure water. It quenches your thirst like nothing else, keeps you hydrated, cools down your body temperature, cleans up your digestive system, hydrates your skin from the inside out and if you care to know, and it even helps you lose weight.
Now let’s talk about the sun. If you are like me, you love to take advantage of the weekends to play on the beach or pool. Please lather up! Don’t underestimate the value of a good sunscreen, make sure to buy a reliable brand and use 30SPF or higher. At least 50SPF for your face. Reapply as indicated or more often. Don’t forget your sunglasses and your hat too. Scalp sunburns are pretty bad.
When you are out and about, bring along some light snacks: cucumbers or carrots with hummus, and some nice and refreshing fruit like watermelon or pineapple. Keep it simple, this way you don’t have to pack up too much and you don’t pack extra weight!
It is barbeque season, so take advantage of that grill! Put it to work! Why using it just for the meat? Throw in some carrots, sweet potatoes, peppers, onions, zucchini, asparagus, corn in a cobb, pineapple… whatever you may want to have as a side! Skip that fatty potato salad or that gluten-packed pasta salad and grill some healthy sides that will go along so well with your steak/chicken/salmon meal. It’s all too warm? Don’t forget your greens, fresh and cold out of the fridge, always ready to go, packed with fiber to help digest that protein feast!
Dessert? Yes, please! Enjoy that grilled pineapple sprinkled with cinnamon, or bring out that family size watermelon, nice and cold and enjoy it with your loved ones – it’s so nice to eat outside and not have to worry about its sticky juice on your hands, arms, floor…
Last but not least, let’s talk about exercise. If you work out outside, take it easy. Don’t overload yourself with too many series or too much time in the heat. Either workout outside early in the morning when it’s not as hot, or after sunset. Trust me, I nearly fainted after my morning run the other day. Bring your water bottle with you. You may not need it when you exercise for less than an hour on a normal day, but with the heat, you will definitely need it right next to you. If you can, bring your workout routine inside on the extremely hot days, it is healthier. Sweating is good for you, but it is nice when it comes from exercising your body, not from the air temperature, this way you are just putting your body through an unnecessary stress.
And who needs stress? It is summer after all! Sit back on that pretty floaty of yours or on your nice couch (with the AC cranking) and enjoy yourself. Relax… and have a happy and healthy summer!
