6 Easy Ways to Declutter Your Life
Do you remember the feeling of satisfaction you had the last time you decluttered your wardrobe? Let me spell it out to make sure you remember: you had so many clothes you didn’t need which were preventing you to find or see the clothes you loved + needed.
Well, it’s the same for your life! Decluttering can get you more focused and clear! What can you declutter more of this coming week?
1. Getting rid of things you don’t need
The first step you can take to simplifying your life is to get rid or donate things you don’t use or need anymore. Getting rid of excess clutter in your home and everywhere else will help reduce your stress and you will have extra space for the things you truly love. Here is the list of things to get you started:
- Clothes
- Makeup
- Shoes
- Nail Polish
- Jewellery
- Home Decor
- Kitchen Appliances
- Home Decor
- Magazines/Books
- Old school Records
It’s going to be a lot of hard work but it will be entirely worth it! And I am here to help!
Here are a few epic tips that were shared by my community members:
“Keeping a bag beside your clothes closet and continue to add to it until it gets full”
“Composing a capsule wardrobe”. I didn’t know much about this concept so I am really glad that one community member brought it up! Basically, it’s the concept of creating 30 and something pieces of wardrobe per season that defines your style.
2. Limit the things you buy
When it comes to buying things, what’s your soft spot? What do you buy even if there’s no room for it? My soft spot is BOOKS! I used to buy any books that I liked: because of how pretty the cover looked, if someone recommended it to me, or if it was somewhat related to a topic that interested me. Crazy right? Especially that I am a slow reader! You can imagine how my book shelves looked haha. Now I make sure that every book I buy is a conscious choice and that I’ve at least done a bit of research and read a few reviews before buying it.
It’s your turn now: what is your soft spot? Whatever it might be, limit what you buy. Don’t buy it unless you really need it or you are planning on replacing it with something else. This will help not build clutter in your home and make life easier for you.
3. Unsubscribe & Unfollow
Today, I urge you to unsubscribe from emails that you don’t truly love and to unfollow people on social media that don’t inspire you. (haha, hopefully not me!)
You will get less distracted and this will save you plenty of time while you are checking your emails and when you are on social media.
I’ve done this 2 weeks ago and it felt really liberating!
Here is the best tip that was shared within my community:
“Unroll.me lets you “roll” the e-mails so that you have just one e-mail per day, or per week, with a preview of all the newsletters you subscribed to, and for each subscription with just one click you can decide if to roll, to keep in inbox or to unsubscribe.”
4. Limit Electronic Use
This is easier said than done because this requires a lot of self-discipline to limit your time on social media, emails, smartphone, etc.
As almost everything is digital or can be done digitally nowadays, it means you are on the phone or computer for most of your time. It can be easy to get distracted and let hours go by without doing anything useful. (Am I right?)
Don’t let all of this distract you from what you should be doing and what is truly important to you. Life is not meant to be on a screen all day long. Don’t forget to go outside, take a walk, spend quality time with family WITHOUT electronics, mindfully eat without a phone nearby. Let’s get some rest to your eyes and mind!
Let’s make a small step together today. Could you spend ONE hour without looking at your phone? Here are my favourite tips:
Put your phone on airplane mode for an hour during the day, or an hour before going to bed (I do this every night).
“Keep your phone out of the bedroom at night and invest in an alarm-clock!”. This is so simple yet seems like a hard one, aren’t I right? This has been shared on a Instagram convo I launched: click here to read the full convo.
5. Don’t overschedule
I know society makes it seem that being busy all the time is a good thing, but in reality, it’s not.
It’s not healthy to be busy all the time because then you lack time for yourself, time for your family, time for your hobbies and time for what is truly important to you.
Here are some tips on how to not over-schedule:
- Prioritise daily
- Say no more often
- Create white space in your schedule
- Schedule time for self-care and hobbies in your calendar. To make it even easier, make them recurring events.
What do you say? Does this seem feasible?
6. Eliminate Negativity
Eliminating negativity will help simplify your life because you will no longer waste your time listening to gossip, spending time with toxic relationships or people, or caring about things you really don’t care about. Of course, we can’t control or eliminate ALL negativity from our life, but what we can control is what we listen to, or care about.
If everything you consume is all negative or doesn’t give you any joy, then you are just wasting your precious time, making your life more complicated than it needs to be and you are feeding your mind with negative unnecessary things.
Even though you won’t be able to eliminate all negativity, figure out what you are doing right now that is affecting you in a negative way and instead spend time on something that will benefit you.
One of my recent read includes the Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*** by Sarah Knight. This books is so damn-practical. The author greatly guides you in categorising all the stuff in your life that you think you have to care about and actually really assessing whether you have to. Also, what I really loved about this book is the examples of specific situations that the author goes through. Many times I felt like she was really mind-reading me!
