A Little Bit About Me…
And you.
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m a health & wellness coach, who practices what I teach. I live a very healthy lifestyle and I’m proud of it. Of course I wasn’t born with these healthy habits, I’ve had my fare shares of rich-greasy-sugary-fried and all. But nowadays, thanks to a degree in health & wellness, lots of curiosity, reading, researching, testing, practicing and learning, I’ve discovered what is good for me. So I can proudly say that today I’m the healthiest and happiest version of me. Not that I wasn’t happy before. Of course I was happy indulging on 3 servings of dessert (on weekends… it’s ok… right?… At least it used to be ok.) But I am much, much happier now that I’m healthier, lighter, fitter, have a great digestion (read: no stomach pain!) and better mood.
For a few years I was my own testing lab. And we’ve gone through lots of tests here. More than I wish. Eating healthy during the week, unleashing on weekends. Self-testing for possible gluten and lactose intolerances. Going super healthy 24/7. And of-course, going unhealthy 24/7.
After a lot of pain and pleasure, I have found what works for me in terms of eating. And exercising, sleeping, living!
And I’m not here to tell you that what works for me is going to work for you. I wish! I could save you from a lot of testing as well. Although I can help you with some short cuts, but then I’ll have to know you first. As you know, we’re all different (and so blessed for that!) and each body has it’s own needs. Just like we have particular shapes and sizes, we have very particular nutrition, rest and exercise needs.
It’s a process, but a so well-worthy process! Getting to know yourself, making peace with your digestion, loving yourself, loving your body.
Understanding that your body is your temple and worshiping it. It is thrilling!
So, here’s what I’ve found out about my own needs:
Sleep: overall, I need energy to execute my daily chores with grace, so I need to rest. 8 hours of sleep (which I call my beauty sleep) is what I need. Anything above 7 ½ hours works but I feel that I’m absolutely rested when I sleep for exact 8 hours. I don’t even need more than that on weekends. 8 hours and I’m fully charged.
Exercise: I run, I love running, but I don’t go crazy I run from 20 to 30 minutes, that’s about what my tiny dog can handle, 4 to 5 times a week. I practice Pilates anything between 15 to 30 minutes, about 5 times a week. And my most recent game is Calisthenics which I first heard from my (ripped :O) 16 year-old nephew – and my husband and I have been enjoying to explore a couple of times a week. I also stretch every.single.day - no “flexibility” on that one, it’s gotta happen.
Food: speaking of energy, I need good fuel if I want good performance from my “machine”- or using Von Miller’s words: ’Can’t put regular gas in a Ferrari’. I’ve also found out that I want good performance all the time and that I do not enjoy dragging myself around due to the usage of “cheap” fuel.
So I eat: mostly greens - vegetables and fruit in general, organics (everything I can possibly find), grains (except for gluten, since after a lot of pain and other not so fun symptoms, a handful of tests, blood work and an endoscopy, I was diagnosed with non-celiac gluten sensitivity), lets go on: home made granola, plain Greek yogurt, almond milk, lean meat and lots of water.
I’ve reduced my alcohol consumption from zero during the week and let’s call fare on weekends (I wasn’t like going to town but when you don’t drink for a week or two and have a bottle [or two] of wine on the weekend, along with greasy food, it can lead to a pretty nasty hangover) to zero during the week (with rare exceptions, like Birthdays during the week :D) and a couple of drinks on Friday and/or Saturday, and an occasional (gluten free) beer on Sundays. It works for me. Again – I’m not saying that this should work for you. PLEASE do what makes you happy and healthy!
Now the sweet part… that I reduced. Even with the whole healthy cooking passion (I absolutely LOVE cooking healthy meals) I was always creating healthier versions of traditional recipes and creating my own, but there was always some brown sugar involved. So now sweets show up sporadically and they are sweetened basically with raw honey, maple syrup, dates, bananas and other heavenly gifts of nature.
Bottom line is: I do what is good for my body and my overall health. I’m not dramatic about eating or dieting, I don’t follow an specific diet approach, I love food - healthy food mostly and I have found my healthy balance, which allows me to "splurge"every once in a while – after all there’s always holidays, dates, family encounters and your favorite dishes cooked by your favorite ones. But, when I’m in charge, which means holding either a wooden spoon or a menu , I decide what goes in – the pot and my body (which I love and worship – Amen!).
Now let’s talk about you!!
