A couple of weeks ago I had an opportunity to attend an executive summit held by Vistage in Austin, TX. As an executive and leadership coach who mainly works with companies and CEOs I was excited to meet new people and learn from them about their challenges and victories.
The caliber of the attendees and guests was truly impressive: David Meltzer, Tom Stewart and Erik Qualmann were among the keynote speakers sharing with the audience wealth of business and leadership knowledge, newest research and real life business examples. And though each of the speakers delivered great presentations full of practical tools and actionable data, I was really taken by the degree of personal vulnerability and openness embraced by David Meltzer. He shared with us some of his deepest challenges and true success secrets. And he wasn’t just referring to his business success and financial prosperity he created. He easily could focus on just that one side of success. Meltzer is one of the top sports executives in the country; he is a serial entrepreneur with widely successful track record in such industries as technology, law, consulting, etc.
But David chose to speak about being successful as a human being in his relationships, in his health, in his spirituality. He talked about the impact his mentors and teachers had in his life and how gradually his philosophy and world views changed from the Descartes’ purely materialistic approach to a more holistic and metaphysical one. He talked about Energy and the very real impact our energies have in all the aspects of our lives.
As an executive and business coach, I have an extensive toolkit of coaching methodologies and techniques to coach my clients around such topics as employee engagement, succession planning, increase in productivity, etc. The thing is I am also an energy coach. I have received in-depth energy training with the top US coaching school, iPec. I don’t always bring it up though, sometimes I find myself hesitating and wondering how the talk about energy could be perceived. I know how busy, stressed and overwhelmed my regular clients tend to be. They often juggle multiple business projects and responsibilities. But I also know how changing their energies can help them to exponentially increase their effectiveness as leaders and allow them to improve the outcomes they are getting. And all of this can be achieved while creating happy and meaningful relationships and experiences along the way. I have experienced firsthand the difference this knowledge and its application made in my life. I have seen truly transformational changes energy leadership coaching brought to those of my clients who were willing to learn about it. And now I was hearing about it from someone who is extremely accomplished and who is not afraid to be misunderstood. Meltzer wasn’t apologetic for bringing up a topic that might seem esoteric or fluffy to some. He found the key to achieving any goals and he felt it was his duty to share this knowledge with others, even though they might not yet be ready to hear it or use it.
I was looking around trying to read people’s faces. Were there signs of skepticism, maybe confusion, or doubt? I didn’t notice much of that. What I saw was mostly curiosity, excitement and desire to learn and understand more.
There is one thing that became perfectly clear to me that day. Never again will I make any assumptions on my client’s behalf. Yes, we can follow traditional coaching route and get the results you want. I know it works; it resolves issues and brings about positive change and desirable outcomes. But in the future I will not hesitate to mention that along with a traditional approach to coaching we can try something different. And you will get the same or most likely better results that will exceed your expectations. This new understanding of life will not only transform your business and help you to improve the bottom-line, but it will transform all of you as a human being.
After all, isn’t it my first duty to my clients, to do what is absolutely in their best interest? I do trust you as my client to choose what is best for you.
